How To: The One Android Setting You Must Change Before Traveling Abroad
With all the stress that goes into booking flights and lodging, packing (and not forgetting) everything you'll need, finding pet sitters, and everything else that goes with a trip overseas, there's the added stress of staying connected while abroad.Don't Miss: 11 Tips to Make Long Flights More Comfortable Depending on where you're going, Wi-Fi is a terrific option for downloading directions and posting to Facebook, but you'll likely also want to have mobile data to make phone calls or a last-minute reservation. But data isn't cheap, especially for travelers, and keeping it under control can save you serious dough.
Disable App Syncing to Save on Data AbroadThe easiest way to keep data in check is to limit apps syncing in the background. Sure you can totally disable your data connection, but that means having to toggle it back on anytime you need your phone and are away from Wi-Fi. Same deal for Airplane Mode, but you wouldn't even be able to make or receive calls when it's activated.Instead, turning off app syncing will allow you to not only make and receive calls, but also be able to get updates from apps—only they'll update on your schedule. For example, Gmail will no longer continuously ping servers to check for new mail. Rather, it'll only check when you enter the app and refresh. Same goes for all apps that sync in the background, like Facebook, Twitter, and more. And when you limit background syncing when using a data connection, you'll also be saving a good bit of battery life, since apps won't be pulling servers for information using your 3G/4G/LTE radio.

How to Disable App Syncing on Your PhoneThis is the easy part, though different Android devices will have slightly different menus and settings. The first option is to toggle off Sync from the Quick Settings in your notification tray. Again, not all devices will have this available to them. If your device doesn't have that Quick Settings option, head to the Settings app and go to Accounts. From there, select the menu button on the top-right and disable "Auto sync" from there. With auto sync disabled, you won't need to worry about apps using up your expensive mobile data in the background, or needlessly sucking battery life. And while you're planning or prepping for your trip, check out these helpful guides to get the most out of it, and to keep everything running smoothly at home while you're away.Look for cheap flights options using Google Bring your own on-plane entertainment with hands-free movies Keep your plants watered while you travel Prep for a very looooooong, uncomfortable flight We'd love to hear your travel hacks and tips, too! News: iPhone X Roundup Everything You Need to Know About Apple's 10th Anniversary Smartphone
Apple has something big in store for consumers in 2017 to mark the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. One major surprise is that Apple has decided to forgo on releasing a 7S in favor of a redesigned iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. To further commemorate its 10-year milestone, the Cupertino-based company has released the very exclusive iPhone X, garnering much excitement in the process. Now that the iPhone X (pronounced "iPhone Ten") has officially arrived, we've rounded up some of the most noteworthy features included in Apple's exclusive new flagship, and we'll update this guide as new developments occur. For comparison, make sure to check out the features available in the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus:Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Know About the iPhone 8 & 8 Plus
Release Date, Availability & PricingThe iPhone X will be available for preorder on Oct. 27, and will officially be available on Nov. 3. Like the iPhone 8 models, it will be available in either 64 or 256 GB. The 64 GB one will cost $999, while the 256 GB one will run $1,149.More Info: Preorder & Release Dates for the iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus

Only Two ColorsWhile the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus now sport a total of three color options, the exclusive iPhone X will only be available in two finishes — Space Gray and Silver. Image via Apple
OLED 'Super Retina HD' Display with True ToneThe iPhone X will be using an OLED screen with HDR, similar to the Galaxy S8, but using the Super Retina HD moniker. With a resolution of 2,436 x 1,125, a pixel density of 458 ppi, and Apple's True Tone technology, the iPhone X will feature a display that's significantly more vivid than past models.Don't Miss: The Difference Between OLED & LCD Screens & Why It Matters
Almost Bezel-Less DesignThe iPhone X's 5.8-inch screen will encompass almost all the display's front surface. This ultra-thin bezel design will make the handset remarkably compact, coming in at roughly the same size as 4.7-inch iPhone 7.What's even more intriguing is that the upcoming exclusive flagship has completely ditched the iconic home button and has replaced it with an intuitive swipe gesture that lets you go back to the home screen, access recent apps, and multitask — all with a simple swipe up with your finger from the bottom of the screen.

A11 Bionic ProcessorCompared to the iPhone 7 and its A10 processor, the iPhone X is powered by a six-core A11 Bionic neural engine processor, which consists of two performance cores that are 25% faster, four high-efficiency cores that are 70% faster, a 2nd generation Apple-designed performance controller with 70% faster multi-thread workloads, and an Apple-designed GPU that's 30% faster. All told, the iPhone X presents a big leap in terms of power and efficiency. Image via Apple

All Glass Design Reinforced by Stainless SteelFor the first time since the iPhone 4s, the iPhone X will sport an all-glass enclosure comprising of seven layer color process to enrich its hue. For durability, the glass panels are further reinforced with internal laser-welded steel and copper structure. It's claimed by Apple to be the sturdiest glass panel yet. Like the iPhone 4, the iPhone X will feature a stainless steel band to give the handset further rigidity. Image via Apple Jony Ives himself famously envisioned the iPhone to ultimately resemble a smooth, single sheet of glass. Apple's upcoming flagship handset may very well be the closest iPhone yet to realizing Ives' dream.

Wireless ChargingWireless charging has finally arrived and is a standard feature for the iPhone X, as well as the iPhone 8/8 Plus. The iPhone X will charge with any wireless pads that are Qi-certified, giving you a wide range of selection right off the bat. With Apple closely working with Qi for more potential use-cases for this nifty feature, we'll be sure to update this article as developments unfold.Note: Be sure to check out our handy list of the best wireless chargers compatible with the iPhone X that are available today. Image via Apple
Fast ChargingThe iPhone X, just like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, is capable of fast charging, gaining 50% charge in about 30 minutes. However, you have to use Apple's USB-C power adapter. That means more money for you, since the iPhone X ships with a USB power adapter, not a USB-C one. So you would need a compatible USB-C power adapter and a Lightning-to-USB-C cable. So you're looking at over $80 more for that.

Dual Optical Image Stabilization on Rear CamaraJust like the iPhone 7 Plus and the new iPhone 8 Plus, the iPhone X has a 12 MP wide-angle lens and a 12 MP telephoto lens on the rear, with an Æ’/1.8 aperture and Æ’/2.4 aperture, respectively. But what makes this model different is that it sports OIS (optical image stabilization) for both lenses, not just one. Both the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X will also get Apple's new Portrait Lighting mode, which lets you change the lighting conditions in a shot. They both also get slow-mo video recording capabilities of 1080p at 240 FPS, not just 120 FPS. Image via Apple

Revolutionary 'TrueDepth' Camera with IR SensorsThe iPhone X's 7 MP front camera with an ƒ/2.2 aperture, called TrueDepth, is a game changer in the smartphone world. With the omission of Touch ID, Apple has instead made facial recognition its primary biometric security feature for the exclusive flagship. With the aid of an infrared camera, flood illuminator, and dot projector, the iPhone 8 can detect and analyze faces in unprecedented accuracy — regardless of lighting conditions and obstructions such as facial hair and eyeglasses. The iPhone X's Face ID requires your attention to unlock, meaning you have to look directly into the device in order to access it, giving you an extra layer of security to prevent unwanted access. Apple claims that the chances of it being bypassed equals one in a million, compared to Touch ID's 1 in 50,000 odds. Image via Apple The front camera can also be used for not only Portrait mode, but Apple's new Portrait Lighting mode, which lets you change the lighting conditions in a selfie, not just regular portrait shots using the rear camera.

AnimojisThanks to the iPhone X's advanced array of front-facing cameras and sensors, the device can also capture facial movements and translate it into animated emojis — animojis, for short — to provide an exciting new way to communicate with loved ones. Image via Apple
IP67 Water-Resistance RatingFollowing the iPhone 7, the iPhone X has a water resistance rating of IP67, which means it can stay underwater at a depth of 1 meter, or about three feet, for up to 30 minutes.More Info: The iPhone 8 & iPhone X Are IP67 Water-Resistant — Here's What That Really MeansFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Download IPA Files for the iOS Apps on Your iPhone

How To: Download IPA Files for the iOS Apps on Your iPhone
Apple used to make it super easy to get the IPA version of any app on your iPhone just by syncing the device with iTunes, but ever since iTunes 12.7, that's no longer possible. Now, whenever you need to dig into an IPA file, whether it's to reverse engineer it or simply to look for the URL scheme name for Workflow or app icon customization, you'll need to use another Apple app on your Mac.The app in question is called Apple Configurator 2, and it's available for free the Mac App Store. It's primarily used by schools and businesses to install mobile device management profiles on iOS devices and to quickly configure a large number of devices at once with the data, apps, and settings of their choosing. But you can also use it to update your iPhone, rearrange icons on your home screen, and more.Don't Miss: Always-Updated List of iOS App URL Scheme Names For this guide, we'll just be focusing on getting the IPA files of apps installed on your iPhone. Once you've installed Apple Configurator 2 on your macOS system (sorry, there is no Windows version of this tool), you can use the steps below to download and save IPAs on your computer. However, this will only help you download IPAs of apps that have updates available for them that you haven't installed yet. That means it could be a waiting game since you'll have to wait until an update comes out (if one ever does) for the app you want an IPA for before using the steps below.

Step 1: Disable Automatic Updates (Optional)To take full advantage of this method, you should disable automatic updates on your iPhone so that the app you need the IPA file for won't update on its own. If it does, you'll have to wait until the next update comes out to use Apple Configurator 2 to get the IPA file. On your iPhone, open up the Settings app, select "iTunes & App Store," then make sure "Updates" is toggled off. I also suggested turning off Wi-Fi on your iPhone right before following the rest of the steps below, that way it's unlikely apps will update on their own at all. I've had automatic updates turned off and still had apps update on their own, so turning off Wi-Fi temporarily could help in these cases when it's not working properly.

Step 2: Log into Your Apple AccountOpen up the Apple Configurator 2 application, select "Account" from the menu bar up top, then choose "Sign In." In the popup, enter the Apple ID that matches what your iPhone is using, then hit the "Sign In" button. Next, enter the password for the account, then hit the "Sign In" button one more time, and that's it for this step.

Step 3: Connect Your iPhoneNow just connect your iPhone to your Mac using its USB cable, then "Trust" the connection from your iPhone if it's not already trusted. You'll need to enter your iPhone's passcode to finish the trusting process.Don't Miss: How to Untrust Computers Your iPhone Connected To

Step 4: Update the AppsIn the Apple Configurator 2 app, select your iPhone that pops up, then click on the "Update" button in the app's top menu of options. This will provide a popup that will ask you to update all of the apps that need updating. Click on "Update."If you don't want to download IPA files for all of the apps that need to be updated, use the drop-down to select "Only some apps" instead, then uncheck the apps you don't need before clicking "Update."

Step 5: Locate the IPA FilesOnce the updates have concluded, you'll have to dig into your user library files to find them. The easiest way to do this is to open up your Finder, select "Go" from the menu bar, then "Go to Folder" (or just use the Command-Shift-G shortcut instead). In the box that pops up, paste the below directory path inside, then click on the "Go" button and you should be taken right there.~/Library/Group Containers/K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator/Library/Caches/Assets/TemporaryItems/MobileApps Alternatively, you can select "Go" from the menu bar, then choose "Library." If you don't see "Library," hold down the Option key. If you've made the "Library" folder on your Mac unhidden forever, just use the keyboard shortcut Command-Shift-L to jump there. Then, go to Group Containers –> K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator –> Library -> Caches -> Assets -> TemporaryItems -> MobileApps.Once you're in the "Mobile Apps" temporary folder, click on the folder within it (or any of the folders within it, if you see more than one). Each one of the randomly numbered folders within it will be an app, so just browse each of those folders until you see the IPA file hidden inside of the app you're looking for.

Step 6: Copy the IPAs Somewhere ElseThe folder that you're in for Apple Configurator 2 is a temporary one, meaning it could disappear after a certain period of time, after you close Apple Configurator 2 down, or even after you restart your computer. To make sure they don't disappear, copy (Command-C) the files, then paste them (Command-V) into another folder on your "Desktop," in "Documents," or wherever else you want. And that's all there is to it. You know how IPA files for the app you need. Now you can turn them into ZIP files (just by changing .ipa to a .zip extension), unzip it, then start browsing the files contained within for what you need. For instance, if you need a deep link URL scheme name, you'll have to open the app package contents, then hunt for the PLIST file that has the URL types listed.Don't Miss: How to Install Modded & Unofficial Apps on Your iPhone by Sideloading with Cydia ImpactorFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: Print Your Own Photorealistic Gadget Pouches
