Android Basics: How to Unlock Your Phone with Your Fingerprint

Android Basics: How to Unlock Your Phone with Your Fingerprint
Starting with version 6.0 Marshmallow, Android now supports fingerprint scanners natively. This change has effectively opened the floodgates, and now almost every flagship Android device includes a fingerprint scanner out of the box.But if you passed up on the opportunity to configure a fingerprint lock screen during initial setup, it's not too late to get in on the craze. As long as your device includes a fingerprint scanner, setup is really easy, so I'll give you a step-by-step guide below.Don't Miss: The Always-Updated List of Android Basics Guides

Step 1: Go to the Fingerprint Settings MenuFirst up, you'll need to head to your phone or tablet's main Settings menu. From here, select either the "Security" option (most devices), or "Lock screen and security" (Samsung devices). Next, choose the "Fingerprints" option (or "Nexus Imprint" if you're using a Nexus), then select "Add fingerprint" on the following screen. From here, the rest of setup should be just about the same regardless of what kind of device you have.

Step 2: Add a Backup Unlock MethodNext, you'll see a screen that gives you the details on fingerprint security, so read through this carefully, then press "Continue." From here, you'll be prompted to add a back-up code that will be used in the event that the scanner fails to recognize your fingerprint. So choose either "Pattern," "PIN," or "Password" as your back-up unlock code, then enter it into the following menu. After that, you'll be asked to confirm your code, so enter it one more time.

Step 3: Register Your FingerprintDon't Miss:Tips for Improving Fingerprint Scanner AccuracyFinally, it's time to register your fingerprint. An animated demo on your screen should tell you where to place your finger, and when you do so, you'll feel a small vibration. Lift your finger off of the scanner, then change its position slightly, and place your finger back on the scanner. Repeat this same process roughly five times, then your fingerprint will be registered. When you're done there, you can add a second fingerprint by choosing the "Add another" option, and you can repeat this for up to five fingers, but make sure to tap "Done" when you're finished. From now on, whenever you go to unlock your device, you can simply place any registered finger on the scanner, then you'll be taken directly to your home screen.
A Note About Fingerprints & SecurityIn this day and age, keeping your personal data secure is a hot-button issue. It's worth noting that a fingerprint is inherently less secure than a password that consists of random characters, and this is the result of a variety of factors.First, passwords can be changed, but fingerprints cannot. If somebody were to learn your password, you could just change it—but the same cannot be said of fingerprints. This issue is compounded by the fact that today's fingerprint sensors can be fooled by a clone of your fingerprint, so that's something to be aware of.Don't Miss: The Biometric Authentication ConundrumSecondly—and perhaps more importantly—the US government has ruled that it's not a violation of your 5th Amendment rights for police or officials to force you to scan your fingerprint and unlock your phone. This is disheartening, but it's worth noting that if you reboot your phone, Android will require you to enter your back-up password instead of just your fingerprint, so that's something to keep in mind if you ever get pulled over.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

How To: Take Shareable 3D Photos of Any Subject Using Your iPhone
3D has been all the rage for the past few years. It seems like every other film has a 3D aspect to it, our TVs have 3D capabilities, and we can even print functional objects using increasingly affordable 3D printers. And after some trial and error (ahem, Evo 3D), it's finally taking shape on mobiles. While the Evo 3D (as well as a couple of offerings from LG) were largely seen as failures in terms of three-dimensional capabilities, Amazon's upcoming smartphone will likely feature a new way to navigate menus and apps with its four low-energy IR cameras. Then there's the new Google Camera and its Lens Blur feature, which adds depth-of-field to photos, allowing not only for great focusing effects, but also for parallax photos and 3D models using embedded metadata. While this is all good and well, how can iPhone users get in on the fun? With Seene for iOS, you can give now give static pictures a 3D effect on your Apple device.

Snapping a 3D Image with Your iPhoneUsing points that appear in your viewfinder, Seene calculates depth based on how these points interact with certain objects when you move your device around. When you open the viewfinder, you'll want a good amount of these dots to appear on the screen when focusing on your object. Once enough dots appear, tap the shutter and slowly rotate the phone up, down, left, and right until all four segments on the screen turn green. Seene will automatically begin to process the picture when the last segment turns green.
A Few Quick Notes:If a small amount of dots appear, use flash. If too many dots appear, use a less reflective object. You can only snap photos on the iPhone 4S and above. If you have an iPhone 4, you will only be able to view others' "seenes".

Fine-Turning Your Images & SharingBy either rotating your phone around or using your finger, you can see the 3D effect in motion. If your results aren't great, you can retake or edit the depth of field for the picture (left screenshot below). Once you're satisfied, go to the next page and share your image through Seene, or on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr.

Getting More Social on SeeneOf course, Seene wouldn't be a real photo app if it didn't have a social networking aspect. If you share, you can edit your profile, follow people, and view other popular and trending 3D images.

3D Rendering in the FutureAs for the future of Seene, it seems that the next update will allow users to create textured 3D models. Using the same points as it used for the previous effect, it calculates depth based on how you move your device—creating a 3D rendering of the model. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
As you can see below, a 3D rendering of someone's head can be seen on an iPhone. With that 3D model, you can then use it to create an actual model, built by a 3D printer. Awesome right? Stay tuned for the next update to Seene, which should come with this 3D modeling feature for you to use.

It's probably a good idea to check Disable Settings button so that people can't access them through the lock screen, but again, this is all about choice.. Other preferences are mainly for non-Nexus devices, such AOSP Style Pulldown, which is the swipe down left or right action we discussed earlier—these won't apply for us as we are already running AOSP.

How To: Automatically Delete Your Google History on a Schedule

How To: Automatically Delete Your Google History on a Schedule

Your Google history is mostly a binary choice — either you enable it fully, taking advantage of all its features while letting Google record your activity, or you disable it, staying incognito but also missing out on some fun stuff. But now, Google will let you auto-delete your history, allowing you to utilize all the perks that come with recording your history while maintaining some level of privacy. While this is a big deal for all Google users, you'll get the most use out of the change if you're a Google Home and Google Assistant user. These functions require Web & App Activity to be enabled to really be useful, which means things like your browsing, search, and location history are recorded. If you're someone who enjoys their privacy, this can be a difficult trade-off. Now, you can rest assured Google will wipe your recorded data as often as you set it to.Don't Miss: Talk to Google Home Without Saying 'Hey Google' Each Time The function is slowly rolling out to devices over the coming weeks, according to Google. Once you see the feature pop up on your device, this is how it'll work. First, head over to My Activity from any device and log in with your Google account. Under "Web & App Activity" (or "Location History" if you just want to auto-delete location data) tap on "Choose to delete automatically." Next, select one of three time intervals: "Keep until I delete manually," "Keep for 18 months," and "Keep for 3 months." Once you make your decision, tap "Next." Images via Google If you choose either "Keep for 18 months" or "Keep for 3 months," Google will show you a preview of the data you will lose by making your selection. If you choose "Keep for 18 months," it will tell you it will delete data older than 18 months immediately. If you choose "Keep for 3 months," it will display this warning for data older than three months. If you're okay with your choice, tap "Confirm."All that's left to do is tap "Got it" on the following page, knowing Google will routinely delete data as it ages out of your selection. How To: Delete Your Bumble Account (Or Snooze It)

How To: Delete Your Bumble Account (Or Snooze It)
You've had your fun swiping, but now it's time to walk away from all of your online dating apps. Whether it's because you found someone you're interested in or just need some time away, it's important to know how to permanently erase your online dating footprint — and that includes deleting your Bumble account. You have two options here. First, if you're finished with Bumble, you can delete your account and erase your profile, matches, conversations, and other personal data. Alternatively, if you're on the fence and think you may eventually return to the dating app, you can simply snooze your Bumble account to give yourself a break.

How to Permanently Delete Your Bumble AccountNote: Deleting your Bumble account means you will lose all of your current matches and conversations, as well as your profile, so only do this if you're sure about never getting access to your account again.Start by opening Bumble and tapping first on the user icon in the top-left, and then on the gear icon (also in the top-left). Scroll down and you'll have the option to log out and delete your account. Tap on "Delete Account" and you'll be prompted to type in the word "delete" to confirm the deletion of your account. Type it in, tap on "Confirm", and your Bumble account will be erased. No, you won't be able to access this account again. You'll have to make a new one if you ever want to come back. However, if you want to take a break from Bumble, but don't want to delete your account, you can use their new "Snooze" feature to put a pause on your online dating activity.

How to 'Snooze' Your Bumble AccountIn September 2018, Bumble added a snooze feature to allow users to take a break from swiping and interacting with matches, without having to delete their accounts. This "digital detox" is aimed at users who wish to take a step back from social media and instead focus on their own wellbeing. To go offline, open Bumble, tap the user icon in the top-left, then on the gear icon (also in the top-left), and hit "Snooze mode." The app will ask you how long you would like to take a hiatus for: 24 hours, 72 hours, a week, or indefinitely. You can also set an away status, including "I'm traveling" and "I'm focused on work," but that's optional. Once you're done, your Bumble account will be placed into snooze mode, which means your profile will be invisible and not appear in the swipe carousel. However, your existing matches will stay in the app, but they'll see that you're "away." Facebook Messenger 101: How to Chat with Friends Without a Facebook Account

Facebook Messenger 101: How to Chat with Friends Without a Facebook Account
For some of you, whether or not to delete Facebook is a daily struggle. One reason you might not have wiped out your Facebook account yet could be because of Messenger, which provides millions of people with different devices an easy way to communicate with each other. But here's a secret you might not know: you don't need to have a Facebook account to use Facebook's popular chat app.Just to be clear, though, you do need to keep your Facebook account if you want to hang on to your Messenger app as it stands. Deleting your Facebook erases your Messenger account and all of your chats, so if you don't want to lose that data, you can't go nuclear. However, that doesn't mean you can't use Messenger without Facebook. We'll show you how easy it is to set up a new Messenger account without a Facebook account, and afterward, we'll briefly talk about another option available to you if you want to keep the Messenger account you have right now that's connected to your Facebook.Don't Miss: How to Delete Your Facebook Account & Scrub Your Data
You Don't Need to Delete Your Current Messenger AccountIf you truly want to use Messenger without having any other connection to Facebook, you will have to make a new Messenger account. Starting a new Messenger account still lets you message people on Facebook, so you won't miss out there. You can delete your old Messenger account if you have one, but it isn't necessary for making a standalone Messenger account. If you have an existing Facebook account, though, you may hit some annoying hiccups.

Step 1: Start from ScratchTo begin, either install the Messenger app on your device if you don't already have it or delete and reinstall it (app links: Android | iOS), then open it. If you don't have a Facebook account on your device, you should just see options to either sign in with Facebook or "Continue with phone number." Select the latter. If you have a Facebook account on your device, Messenger will try to log you in using that, but you can avoid this by tapping "Switch Account" at the bottom of the display. Then, you can tap on "Continue with phone number."For those of you with iPhones, you'll see a prompt asking if you're sure you want to keep going. Tap "Continue" to bypass the Facebook login. This prompt won't appear on Android devices. Note: If you're logged into an Instagram account on your phone, you may also have the option to log into Messenger using that instead of a Facebook account or setting up a Messenger account with your phone number.

Step 2: Enter Your Phone NumberOn iOS, enter your phone number when prompted, then tap "Continue." If your number is tied to an existing Facebook account, Messenger will once again prompt you to log into that account. You can skip this by tapping "This isn't my account" at the bottom of the display. On Android, you'll need to give Messenger access to your verification code to confirm your phone number. Tap "Continue," then tap "Allow" on the following popup. Enter your phone number, tap "Continue," then enter the six-digit verification code sent to your phone via text. If your number is connected to an existing Facebook account, Messenger will ask if you want to sign into that account. Just tap "This Isn't My Account" to continue.

Step 3: Add Your Name & PhotoNext, enter your name, then tap "Continue." On the following page, you can set a profile picture either by tapping "Choose From Photos" or "Take Photo." If you'd like to take one later, tap "Not Now."

Step 4: Enable PermissionsOn iOS, Messenger will first ask you to enable notifications. If you want to know whenever you've received a message, you'll want to enable this. Tap "OK", then tap "Allow" on the following popup to turn on notifications. Of course, you can also tap "Not Now" to keep notifications disabled. Next, Messenger will ask for access to your contacts, which makes it easy to find Facebook users you already know. If you'd like to give Messenger permission to access your contacts, tap "OK" ("Turn On" on Android) then tap "OK" again on the following popup ("Allow" on Android). You can always tap "Don't Allow" if you change your mind.

Step 5: Start MessagingCongratulations! You've successfully created a Messenger account with no ties to a Facebook profile. If you linked your contacts, those with Facebook accounts will appear here. Otherwise, you can easily search for the names of any Facebook contacts you're missing. If you're sick of Facebook and already have a Messenger account connected to that, you can simply deactivate your Facebook account instead of deleting it. This will allow you to still use Messenger while you're Facebook account is on hold.Don't Miss: How to Set Up Your Facebook Account to Delete Automatically When You DieFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Copy a downloaded eBook to a Kobo Wireless eReader

How To: Copy a downloaded eBook to a Kobo Wireless eReader
Through Thursday, January 19th, Borders is offering the Kobo Wireless eReader for $99 with coupon—that's $40 off its typical retail price of $139! Though the Kobo Wireless eReader comes preloaded with 100 out-of-copyright classics, new users will nevertheless be interested in filling their new eReaders with their own books. Downloading eBooks from the official Kobo bookstore is easy. But what if you want to buy your books from someplace else? Or even get your books for free from somewhere like Project Gutenberg? How do you move those books from your desktop to your Kobo Wireless eReader? Well, as it turns out, there are a number of great, free options. The clip below presents an in-depth overview of three of them: Calibre, a powerful open-source eBook management application; Digital Editions, Adobe's Flash-based eBook client; and the good old Windows Explorer. Which is right for you? It depends on your needs. If you just want to drag the books to your eReader and be done with it, then the Explorer method is best. If, on the other hand, you want to manipulate metadata and add cover art, Calibre is your ticket. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

How To: Update Your Rooted Phone

How To: Update Your Rooted Phone
One of the issues with rooting your device is the inability to update your phone via OTA. Any security patches or software updates pushed out by the OEM are lost because your bootloader is unlocked. However, you still can update your device, it just a take a bit more effort.Because OTA updates are designed for stock firmware, any modifications can cause issues with the installation of the software updates. While you can easily ignore this, OTAs are important.OTAs are more than just security patches and software updates. Many OEMs will package new features and bug fixes that improve the experience. This is why you don't want to ignore OTA. Although it takes some effort, updating your rooted device is worth it.
Step 1: Flash the Factory ImagesTo properly install the update, your phone needs to be returned to its original firmware (the way it was before you made any changes). If you used a systemless root method and did not make any permanent changes to files in the system partition on your phone, you'll only need to reinstall the stock boot image. Otherwise, you'll need to reinstall the entire firmware before accepting the update. If you're unsure about whether or not you rooted with a systemless root method or if you don't know what you modified using root access, we recommend flashing the entire stock firmware package for your phone. For those new to the process, we have a guide that breaks down all the steps. We even included some of the links for the factory images of some popular smartphones commonly used by the rooting community. Start from Step 6, as you don't need to re-unlock your bootloader, and make sure you download the factory image for the firmware version you are currently on.More Info: How to Flash Factory Images on Android Using Fastboot
Step 2: Flash TWRPOnce you flash your device to the factory image, you will lose all your modifications: custom ROMs, root, and more importantly, TWRP. You'll need to bring back TWRP so you can flash the OTA update and re-root. Since you were previously rooted, this process should be familiar already, but check out the link below for a refresher on installing TWRP.More Info: How to Install TWRP Custom Recovery

Step 3: Flash the OTA File Using ADB SideloadNow, you need the OTA file from the OEM. This is a ZIP file for firmware version for the OTA update. Typically, you find this on the manufacturer's official website (we link some below).Factory images for Nexus or Pixel devices Factory images for HTC devices Factory images for Motorola devices Factory images for OnePlus devices Factory images for Essential devices If you can't find the OTA file on the OEM's website, you have two more options. First, you can tap the OTA update notification on your phone, let the OTA download, but don't install it yet. Instead, look for the downloaded OTA file with a root file explorer. Most phones will store this file in /cache from the root partition, while others will store it in /data/data or on your internal storage partition in a folder named .ota.If you can't find the OTA file on your phone after downloading it, try searching through the threads in XDA. XDA has a forum for pretty much every Android phone, and there is a good chance someone posted the file. And if you can't find one, you can always request one to see if anyone was able to get it.Either way, you'll need to move the file onto your computer. Once you've done that, boot back into TWRP. You can use a button combination (usually power and volume down when your phone is shut down), but this varies between devices. So for the most surefire way, you'll need to use ADB.On your computer, install ADB and Fastboot, then open a command prompt or Terminal window and redirect to the ADB and Fastboot directory. If you are unsure how to do this, use the link below for a complete tutorial.More Info: How to Install ADB & Fastboot on Windows, Mac, or Linux Now, connect your device to your computer using a USB cable (preferably the OEM cable). Open Settings, select Developer Options, and enable USB Debugging. Select "OK" on the "Allow USB debugging" popup. On your computer, input the following command, adb devices You should a series of number and letters and the word "device." If you don't see this or if the command prompt or terminal display s"unauthorized," unplug and replug your USB cable and make sure to select "OK" on the popup. If everything looks correct, input the following command: adb reboot recovery Your device will restart and open up TWRP. When you reach the main menu, select "Advanced" and "ADB Sideload." On your computer, input the following: adb sideload <ota.zip> Replace <ota.zip> with the OTA file. You must include the full name and location of the file. The easiest way to accomplish this is to type the first part of the command (adb sideload), add a space, then drag and drop the OTA file into the terminal or command prompt. Press enter, and after the OTA finishes installation, select "Reboot" on your phone.

Step 4: Flash the Magisk ZIPAfter you restart the system, double check that the update was installed correctly. Open Settings and choose "System." Select "About phone" and find the build number. The build number should be the same number as the update version, indicating you are running the OTA.Now it's time to re-root. Make sure Magisk ZIP file is still on your phone's SD card or internal storage. If not, open your Magisk Manager app and select "Install," then tap "Install" again on the prompt, and finally, choose "Download ZIP only." Repeat the instructions in Step 3 to reboot back into the recovery. When you reach TWRP's main menu, select "Install" and choose the Magisk ZIP. Swipe right on the slider to install Magisk. Reboot your phone using the button below, and you'll have root once again. News: Microsoft's Cortana Just Blew Siri Out of the Water

News: Microsoft's Cortana Just Blew Siri Out of the Water
As Microsoft unveiled their new Windows Phone 8.1 software update yesterday, undoubtedly the most memorable takeaway was their showcase of Cortana. Competing directly against Apple's Siri and Google's Now, Cortana is Microsoft's entry into the digital voice assistant fray, and the official replacement to their search app. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Cortana's name and voice are adapted directly from the AI in Microsoft's Xbox Halo game, and she's meant to be aware, informative, and at times a little fun.

Your Personal NotebookPowered by Bing, Cortana stores information about you in a Notebook, allowing you to view and modify the information that is keep in the service. Much of the information stored can be figured out automatically, either through previous searches, location data, etc. But you will also have the ability to add and edit information manually, giving you complete control over what Cortana knows about you.

Event- & People-Based RemindersPossibly the biggest advantage over Siri is Cortana's people-based reminders, an aspect of their event-based reminders. Instead of a simple "remind me to call mom", you can say something to the effect of "next time I speak to mom, remind me to tell her I won the lottery." Check out the video below around the 36 second mark to see an example. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Now the next time you call mom, you'll see Cortana's reminder right on the call screen. And of course it's not just limited to calls, as you could also say "next time I'm at work, remind me to email Nelson".

Contextual AwarenessMimicking a feature found in Google Now is Cortana's contextual awareness. Simply put, this feature allows for a more conversational type of communication, rather than one way. Check out this example of search for a sushi restaurant, obtaining the relevant results, and retrieving directions and traffic information: As you can see, the second query didn't require the name of the restaurant, as you can simply ask for directions to the "1st one".As another example, let's say you're curious about Bill Clinton. You can ask "Where is Bill Clinton from?", get your answer, and then ask "How old is he?". Based on your previous query, Cortana knows that you're referring to ol' Slick Willy when you say "he" in the follow up question.A separate, but smart aspect to this "awareness" is typing questions or searches into Cortana. We're not always going to be in a position to speak to our assistant—concerts, crowded bars and restaurants—and when typing in a query, Cortana is smart enough to hold off on the verbal feedback. She assumes that if we're not in a position to speak, we're also not in a position to easily hear the response.

Integration with AppsCortana also integrates seamlessly with a large number of third-party apps. Using Hulu Plus as an example, you can ask Cortana to add shows to playlists, which launches the app, sets the playlist, and exits back to Cortana. Of course, you can also play shows directly from Cortana's UI.
How Does Cortana Feel About Siri? Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Oh, snap! Cortana's "personality" is something Microsoft put a lot of work into, and that's obvious when you ask certain questions. As a Microsoft engineer said, "She's charming, especially for a circle." Please enable JavaScript to watch this video. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video. Of course Siri has jokes too, but there's just something about Cortana's delivery makes it seem less contrived than her counterparts. Truth be told, I sort of cracked up at the "space man" joke. What are your thoughts on Cortana? She seems like a home run for Microsoft, enough that I may consider a switch from Android. Of course, I have a lot faith in Google Now, and many of Cortana's features (contextual awareness, a "Notebook" like database) are already baked into Now—plus, my world is currently powered by Google services, making the switch much harder to Microsoft Bing and Live.So while the comparison is more on par to Google Now, it's Apple that should be worried here. Lots of third-party voice assistants are capable of doing as much or more than Siri, and Cortana just blew her out of the water. Of course, now that Microsoft has played their hand, Apple has a few months to catch up before they unveil the iPhone 6, and presumably the next iteration of iOS and Siri.

Android Basics: How to Enable Unknown Sources to Sideload Apps

Android Basics: How to Enable Unknown Sources to Sideload Apps
One of Android's biggest strengths relative to other mobile operating systems is how simple it is to sideload apps that aren't hosted on the Google Play Store. Rather than having to go through complicated jailbreaking procedures, all you need to do to allow for sideloading apps on your Android device is enable a single option.

Enabling 'Unknown Sources' on Android Nougat or LowerThe exact names of the settings entries listed below may vary slightly from device to device, but the overall process should be very similar. To begin, head to your phone's main settings menu, then look for an entry titled either "Security" or "Lock screen and security." (1) Security menu on stock Android, (2) Lock screen and security menu on Samsung devices From this menu, simply tick the box or toggle the switch next to the "Unknown sources" entry, then press "OK" on the popup.

Enabling 'Unknown Sources' on Android Oreo or HigherStarting with Android 8.0, the process of sideloading apps has changed dramatically. No longer is there a system-wide "Unknown Sources" setting — instead, it's now handled on a per-app basis. This means that when you download an APK with your browser, for instance, you'll have to give your browser permission to install apps. Same goes if you try to install an APK from your favorite file explorer — the file explorer will need explicit permission to install apps as well. While this is a pretty big departure from the way things worked before, it's actually pretty simple. Just download APKs as you normally would, but when you launch the APK, you'll be prompted to allow the permission. Tap "Settings" on the prompt, then enable the switch next to "Allow from this source" on the following screen. From there, hit your back button, then you can resume installation.

Sideloading AppsAfter that, you're all set up and ready to go. From now on, you can simply download any APK installer file directly to your Android device, then tap the Download complete notification to launch it. From there, press the "Install" button on the following screen, and within seconds, your sideloaded app will be ready to use. What are some of your favorite apps that aren't hosted on the Google Play Store? WiFi Prank: Use the iOS Exploit to Keep iPhone Users Off the Internet

WiFi Prank: Use the iOS Exploit to Keep iPhone Users Off the Internet
Relentless in its fury, the iOS text messaging exploit that exploded onto the scene late last week seems to do more damage than initially reported.Used to reboot devices and crash the Messages app, the string of text can also be used to crash third-party apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. And thanks to YouTuber effective.power, we now know that the bug can be used to crash an iPhone user's Wi-Fi settings.Don't Miss: How to Fix Messages App Crash on Your iPhone In essence, you create a personal hotspot using an Android device, or a Mac or Windows computer, and rename it using the unicode characters that iOS hates. Then, whenever someone tries to manually connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot near you, like one at Starbucks, the Settings page on their iPad or iPhone will crash and they will be unable to connect to a network. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
How to Set Up a Wi-Fi Killing Hotspot on a MacLike already mentioned, you can set up a Wi-Fi killing hotspot using Android or Windows, but I'll be showing you how in Mac OS X.Theoretically, you could set one up on an iPhone (go to Settings -> General -> About and rename your device using the text string below, then create a personal hotspot), but we don't recommend it, as it will surely cripple your iPhone before it can cause chaos on anyone else's.
Step 1: Create a HotspotClick on the Wi-Fi icon in the top-right of your menu bar and choose the "Create Network" from the menu. (Wi-Fi must be on to see this option.)

Step 2: Enter the Malicious UnicodeEnter a modified version of the iOS unicode exploit (which you can copy from here) into "Network Name," leave "Channel" as is, and click on "Create."

Step 3: Verify Your Network WorksYou will now see a brand new network, under the Device headline, with the modified text string as the name.

Step 4: Watch Chaos EnsueAnyone with an iPhone that's in the vicinity of the Wi-Fi network you just created will have their Wi-Fi settings force-close when the networks are refreshed—and it will happen every time.If their iPhone is set up to automatically remember a nearby network, they will still be able to connect to the Internet that way. This only works if they need to enter the Wi-Fi settings to manually choose or switch the network. While this may sound useless, it makes a pretty great prank at a school library, airport, or coffee shop where there's sure to be lots of people connecting to Wi-Fi on their iPhones.
How to Fix Your iPhone's Crashing Wi-Fi SettingsAs of now, there is no fix like there is with the Messages app bug, so if your Wi-Fi settings start crashing on you, I suggest leaving your Wi-Fi settings alone until you're out of range of the hotspot (if you need to connect to a Wi-Fi network).
Other Apps That the iOS Bug CrashesIn effective.power's video, he showcases not only the Wi-Fi exploit that I detailed above, but also how the bug crashes other apps, like Maps, Mail, and Contacts. We tested out the bug and got it to crash Instagram through direct messages, Snapchat through direct messages, and Facebook with a simple post.
Are there any other apps that you're aware of that also crash thanks to the iOS bug? Let us know in the comments below.Follow Apple Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Apple tips.

How To: Add a Define Word Option to the Copy/Paste Menu on Your Nexus 5

How To: Add a Define Word Option to the Copy/Paste Menu on Your Nexus 5
Even as a writer by trade, I'm not intimately familiar with every word in the English language. When you're typing something out on your Nexus, sometimes you think to yourself, "Is that right? Am I using the correct word here?" Then, you have no choice but to bring up Google Now and do a search for that word to make sure you're using it correctly.Developer perseus0807 decided that this whole ordeal of copying text, switching to another app, and pasting it in a different field is just too cumbersome. He created an Xposed module that can easily skip the extra steps in this exchange, pointing you directly to the word's definition with a system-level integration that makes the whole process feel natural. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
PrerequisitesRooted Nexus 5 (or any rooted Android device running AOSP) Xposed Framework installed Unknown Sources enabled

Step 1: Install XDictionaryFrom the Xposed Installer app, head into the Download section and search XDictionary. Tap the top result, then swipe over to the Versions tab and hit the Download button on the first entry. Alternatively, you can install the module directly from this link. This will automatically launch the installer process, so tap Install on the next screen. When that's finished, you'll get a notification from Xposed telling you that the module needs to be activated. Tap the Activate and reboot button here, and Xposed will take care of the rest.

Step 2: Using XDictionaryWhen your phone finishes booting back up, you can already begin using the module's functionality. While typing in a text field, double-tap or long-press the word you're not sure about. This will select the word and bring up Android's normal cut-copy-paste interface. In addition to that, you'll also see a new Define button directly above your selected text. Tap that, and you'll be taken directly to the word's Dictionary.com page. It's a simple little module, but it does its job in a slick, system-integrated style. On top of that, it should work with any third-party keyboard. How are you liking this new functionality? Let us know in the comments section below.

How To: Cast Amazon Instant Video to Your HDTV

How To: Cast Amazon Instant Video to Your HDTV
Amazon just signed a deal with HBO to host the cable channel's original content on its Instant Video service. For those of us with Amazon Prime accounts, this is great news—but there aren't any readily apparent options for playing it on Chromecast. The iOS app lacks Chromecast support, and for some stupid reason, there is no Amazon Instant Video app for Android, which means you need to use a Flash-supported mobile browser to even play it.Casting from the Chrome browser for Mac or PC seems like the last option, but the web version of AIV uses a format that Chromecast can't handle. All is not lost, however, because there's a way around that last hurdle. Just follow these simple steps and you'll be streaming Instant Video from your computer to your Chromecast-connected TV in no time. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Install Chrome & Google Cast ExtensionChrome for PC or Mac The Google Cast Extension

Step 2: Change the Default Player SettingsFrom the Chrome browser, just head to the Amazon Instant Video page. In the top menu bar, look for Settings near the right-hand side. Once you've clicked that link, scroll down a bit and look for the Web Player Preferences section. You'll notice that by default, it is set to use Microsoft Silverlight. This is a format that Chromecast can't utilize, and therein lies the problem. Switch this setting to Adobe Flash Player, and you'll see a message letting you know that Your preferred web player has been updated. At this point, it's safe to back out to the main Instant Video page.

Step 3: Cast Amazon Instant VideoMuch like any other video that you can cast with the Chrome browser, you should start by tapping the Chromecast icon next to your address bar. From here, select your Chromecast to begin casting. Once connected, you'll notice that the Chromecast icon has filled in and turned blue. Now, just click any video and hit Watch Now. You may be asked once again to switch back to Silverlight, and if so, just click Continue Using Flash. To fill out the big screen, just tap the full screen button on the web player. Then, kick up your feet and enjoy some episodes of The Wire (sorry, no Game of Thrones at the moment). So, what's your favorite HBO show on Amazon now? Tell us about it in the comments section below.
