How To: Dropped Your Phone in Water? Here's How to Keep Your Wet Android or iPhone from Being Water Damaged
When it comes to busted smartphones, liquid damage ranks right up there with shattered screens as one of the most common issues owners have to deal with—as well as the most embarrassing. Thankfully, though, with the rise of waterproof phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 and even the iPhone 7, this is becoming less and less of a worry. But not everyone has a waterproof device. In fact, unless your smartphone is rated IPx7 or higher, which means it can be submerged in water up to a certain degree, you should be extra careful with your phone around water. What you do in the event that your phone does get wet will determine its salvageability. While there are no bulletproof solutions to fixing liquid damaged devices, there are steps you can take to increase its chances of coming back to life. So the next time you drop your HTC One in the toilet, keep these things in mind.Don't Miss: The 4 Most Durable Premium Smartphones for Clumsy People

Rice Is Not a Real SolutionLet's first talk about the obvious—moisture. The biggest concern with a phone that's wet is an electrical short occurring and knocking out the phone and its many components. Remember, water is great at conducting electricity. Image by Steven Depolo/Flickr Contrary to popular belief, burying your wet phone in a bowl of uncooked rice will not make much of a difference, especially if it's soaking wet. While it's true that rice grains will help suck some moisture out, and in some instances dry the insides out, doing so won't completely solve your problems.Don't Miss: Myth Debunked: Uncooked Rice Isn't the Best Way to Save Your Water-Damaged Phone A water-damaged iPhone 5s. Note the corrosion and rust. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks Tainted water surrounds us everywhere, and contains trace amounts of dissolved minerals such as calcium and chlorine, to name just a few. As your phone dries out, these impurities will rapidly collect around the myriad number of electrical contacts inside the phone, causing corrosion and rust.
Back Up Your Phone!Back up your phone on a regular basis to keep data loss at a minimum at worst. This is the best way to insulate yourself from disaster. If you have an iPhone, take advantage of iCloud or back up to iTunes regularly. If you have an Android, make sure to back up everything you need to with your Google account, or use a third-party tool. If the worst should befall you, and you end up getting a replacement device, at least your precious data is intact.Don't Miss: How to Back Up Any Partition on Your Android Device
Keep Your Phone Away from the BathroomStop taking pictures in the bathroom! As silly as this sounds, this is by far the leading cause of water damage, with an extra serving of suck when you're reading texts while over the toilet. No wonder why water damage is the most embarrassing problem phone owners experience. A disaster waiting to happen.
And Babies & Pets!Always keep your devices a safe distance away from pets and children, especially infants. Babies and phones don't mix—they love to slobber and bite into things. I once had an iPhone 6 that had its ear speaker knocked out and LCD distorted because I was careless enough to leave it within reach of my then 9-month-old. When I finally realized what I did, it was too late; he was sucking on the top of it.
What You Need to Do When Your Phone Gets Water DamageIn the event that your phone does get wet, the first thing to do is to turn it off instantly. This is perhaps the most important thing, because you don't want to cause any more damage than necessary. Remove the battery if you have a device that allows it—do not respond to that Snapchat, "like" a post, take one last selfie—just turn it off! And don't even think about plugging your phone into a charger. Leave the phone alone and get it looked at.Take it to a repair shop as soon as possible. The chances of a successful repair and recovery are higher the sooner the device is taken in. Ask around and see which shops are equipped for water damage repair. Shops that have ultrasonic cleaners are ideal, as these machines do a very thorough job of cleaning up the board.Don't Miss: Tips from a Tech: Save Money on iPhone Repairs by Knowing Your OptionsAlso, something to keep in mind when getting your phone repaired: parts and assemblies may have shorted and may be irreparable, so they might need to be replaced—and that'll cost extra. During my time as a repair tech, the most common parts replaced were batteries and charging ports. The average price for treating water damaged devices is $65 to $80 if successful. If not, you can expect a decent labor fee when parts replacement is needed.Warranties aren't normally given on water damaged devices, but it never hurts to ask, so make sure you do that before taking anything in to a shop. If you have AppleCare+ or another insurance provided by your carrier or a third-party, it might be cheaper to just pay for a replacement device rather than get it fixed, and that's why it's important to back up your device, as mentioned earlier. If you don't have a warranty or any insurance, and want to use the repair shop as a last resort, you can try drying it out yourself at home, but it takes patience and does not guarantee success, depending on the severity of the water damage. But you always risk a more expensive repair that way, if not successful, so it might be better to bite the bullet and pay up if you're phone is something you can't live without.Don't Miss: DIY Repair: The Basics to Repairing Your Phone Without Breaking ItWhile there are no magic bullets, knowledge provides a great defense. How To: 6 Habits That Will Help You Avoid Bad Android Apps on Google Play

How To: 6 Habits That Will Help You Avoid Bad Android Apps on Google Play

When I review apps, I'll oftentimes end up downloading at least one or two "bad" apps that either lied about their functionality or were riddled with ads. These apps, while not as harmful as malware, can still be a major headache. This got me thinking about the other bad apps on the Play Store and how to avoid them.It is no secret the Google Play Store has a malware problem. However, what's talked about even less is the number of apps designed to either bombard you with ads or capture your data using batch permissions and various other methods. These apps are far more prevalent and are not always removed from the Play Store.Below, I've listed six habits you can implement to avoid these bad Android apps. With each group, we'll look at a certain type of app and tell you what you preventative measures you can take to avoid them. This list can't cover all the bad apps on the Play Store individually, so you'll still need to be cautious, but we've also included recommendations at the end to further improve your ability to navigate the murky Play Store waters.
Foreword: Why These Apps Exist & What Google's DoingThe Play Store has been synonymous with malware such as worms, ransomware, and adware since its inception. Over the years, Google has implemented new steps to combat this problem, the biggest being Play Protect. The new program acts as an antivirus scanner that analyzes all apps on the Play Store before they're installed on your device. As a result, Google was able to take down 700,000 bad apps in 2017, a 70% increase from the previous year. The problem is Play Protect's antivirus scanner is pretty mediocre. AV-Test, an independent IT security institute, has been testing the malware detection rate of antivirus scanners found on the Play Store, including Play Protect. As recently as July 2018, Play Protect has been near the bottom the list, with detection rates well below the industry average. But malware isn't the only threat. For example, Redditor Busymom0 made a detailed post about their discovery of an "Adult Hook Up" app which had over 70,000 downloads in one month and made $200,000 in revenue. This was without stealing data or corrupting any devices, so it would have gotten past even the best antivirus scanners. Instead, it made false promises and was able to sucker many users into paying $19.99 for one week of access to the service. And this was an app on the iOS App Store, which has a much more thorough vetting process than the Play Store. This is just one example of a type of app that can slip through the cracks. Others include copies of popular apps and those that abuse permission requests or display excessive ads even when you're not actively using them. Whether they deliver on what they promise is irrelevant, because as long as you download the app, they have a chance of getting you to tap on an ad, make a purchase, or inadvertently hand over data that can be sold to marketers. Either way, they make a buck.

Tip 1: Watch Out for Apps That Are Too Good to Be TrueAs the saying goes, "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is." The first habit you should implement is to avoid apps that are promising way too much. For example, there are several apps on the Play Store that claim to let users update their operating system to Android Pie, including one which has over ten thousand downloads. I couldn't believe more than ten thousand users thought this was possible when the method to update your phone is pretty straightforward and well-discussed online. You may have come across other apps that fall into this "too good to be true" category. It's particularly common with apps that relate to games. Some will claim to give you free in-game currency like Fortnite's Vbucks, and others will offer cheats and hacks to get you ahead in a game. Then there are outright fake games — before Fortnite came out on Android, there were dozens of half-hearted "Battle Royale" clones trying to make a quick buck.Another common category here is medical apps. Those claiming to diagnose diseases, test your vitals (with the exception of heart rate apps), or even treat illnesses are typically apps you should shy away from. Some shady developers will even put their app on sale to lure new users with a "deal." The fact is, if an app is truly groundbreaking, the tech blogosphere will talk about it. We will talk about it. Reddit will talk about it. Your friends will talk about it. Rarely will you randomly find a true diamond in the rough on your own.

Tip 2: Don't Install Apps with Batch PermissionsBack in the early days of Android, the apps I hated the most were the ones that requested permission to access sensors they didn't need. Many would even go so far as to batch-request permission to access all of your phone's sensors. This isn't as common as it used to be, but the technique is still in practice. Thanks to the data collected by these sensors, our phones know quite a bit about our day-to-day lives. As I highlighted in a previous article, hackers can spy on you if they have access to seemingly innocuous sensors like your gyroscope or your ambient light sensor — even without tapping your camera or microphone. The most common method of achieving this is with an app that batch-requests permissions, some of which can be found on the Play Store.Don't Miss: It's Not Just Your Camera & Mic — Here's All the Crazy Ways Your Phone Could Be Used to Spy on You An app batch-requesting permissions using the pre-Marshmallow model. Google tried to correct this issue by implementing granular app permissions in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which forced apps to request permissions individually as they were needed. If you've ever seen a popup saying "XYZ App Would Like to Access Your Location — Allow or Deny," that's the new system. However, the app must target at least Marshmallow to use this new permission model. If it doesn't, it can use the old method of requesting all permissions at the time of installation (when you see that "XYZ App needs access to" popup above). Unlike the granular model, this old style is all or nothing — in other words, if you don't want to give the app permission to access every sensor it requests, you simply can't install it. An app using the new granular permissions model. But if a developer still wanted to abuse permission access, all they had to do was set their app to target a pre-Marshmallow version of Android like Lollipop or KitKat. Thankfully, this started getting a lot harder on November 1, 2018.After November, Google required that all new uploads to the Play Store must target Android Oreo, which means they'll have to use the new granular app permissions model, preventing them from accessing unnecessary data. However, this only applies to new apps and updates to existing apps, so you'll still have to be somewhat vigilant. As for a habit to protect yourself, scroll down and tap "Read More" on an app's Play Store page, then scroll to the bottom of the next page and you'll see when the app was last updated. If you see a date on or after November 1, 2018, you are protected from batch permissions.More Info: How Google's New App Policy Will Cut Back on Android Malware If an app you're about to install hasn't been updated since November 1, 2018, you should manually check the permissions it requests. On the app's Play Store page, scroll to the bottom and select "Permission details." A popup will appear letting you of all the permission requested by the app and how exactly its plans on using them. As can you see in the example below, there is no reason a flashlight app need access to your phone number to make calls, so this is a great reason not to download it. Even after installing an app, you can check its permissions in your phone's settings to see which are enabled by default. If any look fishy, disable them. If the app stops working after you revoke access to a certain permission, you can always re-enable the permission in the same settings menu, but you may want to look for an alternative app instead. For example, if a camera app won't run if it can't access your calendar, you might want to find a different camera app. Check out the link below on how to accomplish this.More Info: How to Manage App Permissions on Marshmallow or Higher

Tip 3: Avoid Apps with Low Scores or Low DownloadsOne of the better ways to detect bad apps is an obvious method often overlooked: checking out the user reviews. Like with most user review systems online, Android's isn't perfect. However, with the abundance of reviews, it is a great place for users to vent their frustrations, deterring potential users from suffering the same fate. When you are interested in an app, check out its score. If it has less than four stars and you had any lingering questions about its legitimacy, just avoid the app. But your due diligence doesn't stop there. Take the time to check out some of the more helpful reviewers. If you see alarming complaints on the first couple of pages, that's your sign to stop. One bad review among a sea of great ones should be ignored, but multiple with the same complaints should send you on your way.But also be wary of apps with perfect 5.0 ratings. In the Reddit post by Busymom0, the scammy iOS app had 67,882 five-star ratings. This is a glaring sign something is wrong — no legit app will have such a high grade. With users giving apps poor ratings because they don't like a color choice, having that many individuals give an app a perfect score is almost certainly the work of fake or paid reviews.Another thing you should look for here is the number of downloads. This number will be posted in two places: At the top of the page below the "Install" button, and at the bottom after first selecting "Read More." The latter will also reveal the date it was released, helping you paint a better picture. For example, a legit app released last month could have one thousand downloads, but an app released a year ago should have more. And if the download number is low but the score is high, you should continue your research. If you're still on the fence about an app, scroll to the bottom of its Play Store page and see if the developer has created other apps. If they have, there will typically be a section labeled by the developer's name, listing all the apps they've created. Check out each one and see the ratings and downloads. If their other apps have a similarly low score and rating, you should probably avoid using any of their apps.

Tip 4: Look Out for Apps Flooded with AdsAnother great thing about the user review section is how it can help you avoid apps with hard-to-detect problems, such as ones that overwhelm you with ads. While most malware is difficult to identify for the average user, adware isn't. We've all seen it: An app that was flooded with so many ads that its basic functionality is hindered.A quick way to tell if an app contains any ads is to select "Read More" on its Play Store page and scroll to the bottom. If it contains any ads, the label "Contains Ads" will be listed right below the recommended age range for the app. Of course, just because an app contains ads doesn't mean it's a bad app. Many legitimate developers can only offer free versions of their apps by making them ad-supported. The real trouble here is the type of app that gets overly spammy with ads, and those are a bit harder to detect before installing. The user review section is your primary and (in some ways only) method to avoid installing these apps. However, if you happen to fall victim to this kind of app, uninstall it immediately. While it isn't as harmful to you as malware, it does encourage this behavior of poor app design by rewarding the developers each time you are redirected to an ad's page due to an unintended touch.

Tip 5: Stay Away from Apps by Unrecognizable DevelopersAnother good research tip is to read who developed the app. There are a number of apps on the Play Store that try to trick you into believing they're a different, more famous app. They will copy the icons, even describe the app in a similar manner to the real version of the app. However, because they can't replicate the name, you can usually figure out which one is real by reading the name of the developers. For an example, try searching the Play Store for the SHAREit app. As you can see in the screenshot below, only the first result is the real deal. The second appears to be the SHAREit app at first glance, but the name of the developer isn't the same as the company who created the app (which you can usually find with a quick Google search of the app's name). This was how I was able to avoid downloading the wrong app. Only the first one is real. The others are certainly doing their best to look real. Under "Read More," at the bottom of an app's Play Store page is a list of information regarding the developer. Google requires the developer to provide their email address and physical address. Trying running a Google search on the address and searching the email address. Send the developer an email to see if the email address is valid. If either address is suspicious, there is a good chance the developer is trying to trick you.

Tip 6: Avoid the Known OffendersWhile it would be impossible for us to find every app you should avoid, there are some known offenders that you should be aware of while browsing the Play Store.UC Browser: Vulnerable to a number of security risks, including viruses and adware. Has had multiple data leaks and privacy breaches that still haven't been fixed. ES File Explorer: Riddled with ads and has been caught phoning home to China. Dolphin Browser: Records your video watch history even when using incognito mode. Update to Android P 9.0 (Unreleased): Outright bogus — you can't perform system updates using an app. Besides these specific apps, there are several general categories of apps you should avoid.Task killers, performance boosters, RAM cleaners, and battery savers: Proven ineffective time and time again, and the permissions they require are ripe for data mining. Apps made by Cheetah Mobile: This is a developer known for making useless apps that replicate the look of other legit apps. A petition was made on Change.org urging Google to ban them from the Play Store. Keyboards from non-reputable developers: Keyboard apps, by design, can log everything you type. A malicious developer could easily create a keyboard app to log your typing history and learn your secrets (including your passwords). Free VPNs: Falls in the "too good to be true" category. VPNs capture all data transmissions from your device, so they have the potential to be data-mining goldmines. Only use reputable services, which almost always charge you a subscription fee (there a few legit free ones, but do your research first). Also, thanks to Redditor daredevil117, we learned of a several free VPNs from The VPN Company which use the same UI and are highly sketchy. Avoid them, please. Free music & movies: Not only is piracy illegal, but piracy apps are often filled with malware that steals your data. Cryptomining: These apps are already sketchy, but now that Google has banned them from the Play Store, any app that offers a service involving the practice should be avoided. Image via Google Play Store Also, check out the BadApps subreddit. Redditors inform the public about bad apps they've found on the Play Store that are low-quality or spam. How To: Get Better Quick Settings on a Samsung Galaxy S3 with This Fully Customizable Control Center
Apple may have unabashedly lifted their upcoming "Control Center" from Android devices, but visually speaking, it's an awesome take on Quick Settings that would look pretty good on a Samsung Galaxy S3.I've actually already covered an Android app called Control Center that mimics the look and feel of the Control Center in iOS 7, but that's only skin deep. If you dig the look, but want to harness the full capabilities of your Android system, then try out Android Control Center by developer Dr.Alexander_Breen. This app was inspired by Apple's Control Center, but custom made to take full advantage of Android. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Android Control CenterBreen takes everything that is good about Control Center and enhances it Android style. That means maximum customization: your choice of apps, toggles, shortcuts, icons, borders, and more.If you don't mind spending a couple bucks and helping out the developer, you can purchase Android Control Center directly from Google Play for $1.97, but if you want to try it out before you buy, follow the first three steps below. If you purchased from Google Play, skip to Step 4 below to see how to start using it.

Step 1: Allow Unknown SourcesNow, the free version of this app is not available in Google Play, so we need to enable Unknown Sources first so our phone doesn't block the install. If you haven't done so already, go to Settings -> Security -> Device Administration and check the box next to Unknown Sources and hit OK. Now your device will allow the installation of apps downloaded from outside the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Download the APKOn your phone, go Breen's original thread on XDA and download the latest APK for your specific operating system, either Android 4.3 or 4.2.2 and below.

Step 3: Install Android Control CenterOnce it has fully downloaded, you can access the downloaded file in the Notifications tray or in your Downloads app. Click on the APK and you'll get a prompt to choose your installer. I used the Package installer and hit Just Once. You can hit Always, but there will come a time where you may want to Verify and install via Google Play. After installation, you can now start using and customizing Android Control Center on your Samsung Galaxy S3 or other Android device.

Step 4: Setting Up Your Control CenterYou may notice that the app itself contains no menu option or preference panel. The settings for Android Control Center are actual held in a separate application called ACC Settings. If you open that open, you'll get the full list of features, and it's a pretty extensive one. When you open up a feature, you'll be greeted with more than enough options to fit your style and needs best. You can change just about anything, from how you open and close the Control Center to what color and size the icons are. For a free application, this really does have a ton of features.

Step 5: Adding ApplicationsIf you want to move beyond the stock applications that Android Control Panel provides, you can add more by opening the Control Center and swiping to the right where you will see a X marks where new apps can go. Select an X, then select which app or activity you would like to add to the dock. There is space for 10 other apps total, with five on each screen.

Step 6: Adding FlairStarting with choosing a color scheme between Light, Dark, and Holo. Then go on to changing the shape of the icons, picking the color of the buttons, and adjusting the type of borders, etc. So, there you have it. Android Control Center is super useful and has so many ways to modify and adjust it, that it will make even the most die-hard Apple fanboy cry.Any thoughts or questions? Let us know in the comments section.

A critical aspect of being a softModder is the ability to install apps from outside the Play Store. News: Here's How Much Damage Samsung's Galaxy S7 Can Take

News: Here's How Much Damage Samsung's Galaxy S7 Can Take

We already know that Samsung's Galaxy S7 is one of the most versatile smartphones ever made, complete with edge-to-edge displays, water resistance, and a huge battery. But what's versatility without durability? How much punishment can the Galaxy S7 take? Let's play a game of Samsung Galaxy S7 Punch-Out!! and see what happens. My prediction? Pain. Our hero on this journey is "Little Sam," a plucky little Galaxy S7 edge, dead-set on persevering past the torment of some of the greatest hazards to smartphone safety. Little Sam will have to fight through three circuits—Minor, Major, and World—to become the undisputed smartphone heavyweight champion.

Minor CircuitLittle Sam's first challenge is Plain Old Water. The Galaxy S7 has an IP68 water-resistance rating, so this should be cake.
Little Sam dominates the early rounds, but isn't able to put Plain Old Water down for the count. Seeing that Water isn't putting up much of a fight, but refuses to go down, the ref calls the fight in favor of Little Sam. Little Sam's next challenge is quite the step up from Plain Old Water—the dreaded Washing Machine. Little Sam has heard stories of his ancestors being trapped inside the watery vortices, and the results were not pretty.
Washing Machine comes out throwing haymakers, but Little Sam is able to withstand the onslaught. Our hero takes a little bit of a bruising from Washing Machine, but is able to land the knockout blow late in the sixth round. Sweet dreams, Washing Machine.

Minor Circuit ChampionshipPlain Old Water was not happy about losing to Little Sam. In fact, it was so mad that it transformed into Boiling Mad Water.
Boiling Mad Water started furiously, throwing a flurry of combinations. Little Sam was able to block most of the attack, but doing so wore him out, and he momentarily lost consciousness. The heat from Boiling Mad Water did its best to loosen up Little Sam's watertight seal, but in the end it was to no avail. Little Sam was able to regain his composure, fighting back in the late rounds. Just like the fight against Plain Old Water, the referee determined that water—even when Boiling Mad—was not effective, and called the fight in Little Sam's favor.Little Sam was declared champion of the Minor Circuit. Next up—the Major Circuit.

Major CircuitLittle Sam began his training for the Major Circuit by sparring against Billy Bender and Shawn Scratcher, who bent and scratched Little Sam, respectively. Each was able to dish out a modicum of abuse to Little Sam—Scratcher even left a few scars.
However, our hero handled the pain fairly well. He was ready for his first bout in the Major Circuit, against the dreaded Disposable Flame. Little Sam quickly found out that the competition in the Major Circuit is a lot tougher. Disposable Flame applied pressure early and often, but in the end, Little Sam withstood the attack and snuffed out Disposable Flame. Like Water, Disposable Flame's attacks were effective to a point, but the ref called the match once it was obvious that the damage that Disposable Flame was dishing out had peaked. Little Sam moves on once more via technical knockout.

Major Circuit ChampsionshipNext up, Little Sam squared off against the forces of gravity, which took the form of Sir Isaac Newton. Were he to win here, Little Sam would move on to the final circuit for a shot at the world championship.
It was clear from the opening bell that Sir Newton was not playing around. He utilized his dreaded "reverse uppercut" to repeatedly send Little Sam to the mat in the early rounds. Little Sam withstood the abuse though, pushing himself off the canvas after each knockdown. Sir Newton continued to rain down blows, but none of them could knock Little Sam out. Little Sam sat back against the ropes as Sir Newton exhausted himself by over-punching. Unable to carry on, the ref again called the match in Little Sam's favor. Take that, Newton. These final bouts are going to be a doozy. Time for a little training.

World CircuitLittle Sam finally reached the largest stage, where his fiercest competition awaited. First up would be the Intercontinental title holder, Jack "The Knife" Cleaver. Beyond that lies the world champ, "Hammerin" Henry "The Hammer" Hamm, or Quad H for short.
Little Sam came out strong in his the bout against "The Knife," with well-placed counterpunches. The Knife slashed across Little Sam's front display and his back panel, but no damage whatsoever. In the later rounds, The Knife switched up its strategy and started to focus on Little Sam's aluminum frame. This proved much more effective, leaving permanent scars along Little Sam's sides. The fight went the distance, and it was so close that the judges awarded a split decision. Fortunately for Little Sam, The Knife was busted for performance enhancing drugs shortly after their fight, putting our hero next in line to take on The Hammer.

Title FightThe Hammer didn't seem to take Little Sam seriously leading up to the fight, brushing him off to say that he was fighting way out of his class, relaying that he didn't stand one single iota of a chance. Turns out The Hammer was right. After toying with Little Sam in the first round, The Hammer rained devastating blows onto Little Sam which sent him to the mat, fracturing nearly every bone in his body. It was a tough loss for Little Sam to swallow, but he eventually looked on the bright side. He had made it farther against The Hammer than any of his ancestors had—and most of them had been killed in the ring. Little Sam needed a lot of medical attention, but at least he was repairable after the fight.Little Sam retired after months of recovery following his clash with The Hammer. He may not have ever earned the World Championship belt, but Little Sam had no regrets. He utilized all of his abilities to get a shot at the title, and he never gave up, no matter what got in his way.And in the end, belts don't matter. It's about the fight in the phone, not the phone in the fight.Follow Gadget Hacks on YouTube, Facebook, Google+, and Twitter Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter

How To: Black Out YouTubes Background for Better Battery Life on Your Galaxy S5

How To: Black Out YouTubes Background for Better Battery Life on Your Galaxy S5
The Galaxy S5's screen is truly a feat of modern technology. It uses what is known as an AMOLED display—an acronym for Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emmitting Diode. In short, this technology means that every individual pixel on your phone's screen emits its own light. This is a break from the traditional LCD technology that requires a backlight for any pixels to be visible. As a result of this technology, your screen wastes no additional electricity to power black pixels, since the color black is actually the absence of light, and this can be reproduced by simply not activating the pixels behind black portions of the screen.Developer Ryan R (ryebread) had AMOLED screens in mind when he created his DarkTube Xposed module. It turns the white background image of the YouTube app into a nice, power-friendly black. As an added benefit, the app looks much more clean and crisp with this mod applied. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
PrerequisitesRooted Galaxy S5 (or any other rooted Android device) Xposed Framework installed Unknown Sources enabled

Installing DarkTubeTo install ryebread's battery-saving Xposed module, head to the Download section of your Xposed Installer app. Search DarkTube, then tap the top result. After that, swipe over to the Versions tab, and tap the Download button on the most recent entry. You can also grab the module directly from this link. From the screen that pops up next, tap the Install button. When it's finished with that, you'll get a notification from Xposed letting you know that the module needs to be activated and a reboot is in order. Tap the Activate and reboot button on this notification, and Xposed will take care of the rest for you.

Watching YouTube with Less Battery DrainWhen you get back up, you'll immediately notice the changes in your YouTube app. While the black treatment does not extend to video overview cards and descriptions, it does occupy roughly 5% of the screen. This translates to a 5% reduction in battery consumption from the screen image while you're using YouTube. (1) Old white background. (2) New black background. Not only will your battery thank you, but your eyes can enjoy this new slick-looking theme. How are you liking it so far? Let us know in the comments section below.

How To: Open Links in Different Browsers with Gestures on Android

How To: Open Links in Different Browsers with Gestures on Android
All Android web browsers are not created equal. Some, like Chrome, have slick interfaces and quick rendering, but are not very robust. Others, like Firefox, boast tons of functionality and support add-ons, but are lacking in the interface department and could use a boost in performance. This is why many Android users have multiple browsers installed on their devices. I, for one, use Chrome to browse the mobile web, then switch to Firefox when I need to watch Flash-based content. If you're in the same boat, developer Snaikdev has the perfect app for you. By allowing you to open links in different browsers with an easy gesture, LinkSwipe simplifies web browsing on Android like never before. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install LinkSwipeLinkSwipe can be installed from the Google Play Store for free. Search it by name, or head to this link to get the app on your device.

Step 2: Calibrate LinkSwipeWhen you first launch LinkSwipe, you'll be offered a chance to go through a mini setup wizard. Tap Yes on the popup message to do just that. Under the Step 1 category, tap Set Default and a dialog box will appear. Select LinkSwipe from this list, then choose Always. The Step 2 category is used to calibrate your swipe gesture. The swipe gesture is done after tapping a link, and this calibration process essentially determines the length of time that should pass between a tap and the swipe that follows it.So treat the Calibrate button as if it were a link. Tap it, then when the screen turns blue, swipe in any direction. The time that passes between when you hit the Calibrate button and when you swipe the screen will be used as a baseline in determining how long your future tap-swipe gestures should take. After calibrating your swipe gesture, tap the Done button to finish setup.

Step 3: Configure LinkSwipeLinkSwipe's main screen shows you all of the gestures it is capable of recognizing. There's Tap, which is the normal method of opening links that you're already used to. Then there are four Tap and Swipe gestures, where you tap a link, then swipe either Left, Right, Up, or Down.Only Tap and Tap and Swipe Left gestures are available in the free version of LinkSwipe, but the pro version (available here) unlocks all 5 gestures for a purchase of 99 cents. If you stick with the free version, start by setting up the Default (Tap) gesture. Hit the button directly to the right of this entry to choose your go-to web browser. Next, press the button to the right of the Tap and swipe left entry. From here, you'll see a few additional options. You can set this gesture to Open in browser (which would be perfect if you'd like to use an alternative browser sometimes), or you can assign more advanced actions to this gesture. Other options include using the Tap and swipe left gesture to share the link or canceling out your initial tap so that the link doesn't open in the case of an accidental tap.

Step 4: Using LinkSwipeLinkSwipe can be used on any link in any app, system-wide. If you simply tap a link, it will be opened in your preferred browser automatically. (1) Single-tapped link, (2) Opened in preferred browser If you tap the same link, but this time swipe to the left immediately afterwards, your secondary browser (or action) will be opened. (1) Tap Link and Swipe Left, (2) Opened in secondary browser This is a wonderful app that adds an extra layer of functionality to a common task. I like it so much that I purchased the pro version even though I didn't need the extra gestures. What about you? Has LinkSwipe made your everyday browsing any easier? Let us know in the comment section below, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

People like to cite the iPhone as the device that started the smartphone craze, but the truth is, smartphones had existed for years by the time Apple got into the game. The real groundbreaking feature that this device brought to the table was a multi-touch screen to go along with its "smart" functionality, and this is still the main method we use to interact with our devices today.

News: The New V20 May Take the LG Flagship Throne from the G Series

News: The New V20 May Take the LG Flagship Throne from the G Series
LG announced their latest high-end device on September 6 and its specs are pretty amazing: The new V20 sports three cameras, two displays, three microphones, four DACs for high-end sound, and it's all powered by a removable battery.Seriously, it's almost to the point where LG couldn't have crammed more tech into this Swiss Army phone if they tried, which makes us wonder if the V series has supplanted the LG's premium G lineup as the Korean manufacturer's new flagship device. Sadly, there's no news yet on price, or when this phone will hit the market.Last year's V10 won smartphone fans over with its secondary display and dual-lens camera setup, and the V20 definitely looks like a worthy successor. Aside from a few internal upgrades, LG went all-in with major improvements to the audio and video capabilities in this year's model. While its release may be overshadowed by Apple's iPhone 7 announcement less than 24 hours later, the V20 certainly deserves its fair share of acclaim.

A True Audio & Video PowerhouseOn the front of the V20, you've got a wide-angle 5 MP shooter with an astounding f/1.9 aperture to let in more light. Flanking that is one of the defining features of the V series: a second, separately-powered display that resides at the top of the phone, which lets you quickly launch apps and view notifications. The LG V20 ("Second Screen" visible on left). Image via LG When you flip the phone over, however, the V20's media strength becomes even more apparent. LG opted for a dual camera setup to give photographers more flexibility, so one of the rear-facing lenses is a 16 MP f/1.8 shooter, which is impressive in and of itself. But the second camera sensor packs a wide-angle lens to go along with its 8 MP resolution and f/2.4 aperture, which gives you the choice of capturing more content in the field of view, or using the primary camera for more detail. As an added bonus, the rear-facing camera setup can be used to capture 4K video, with LG's anti-shake "Steady Record" feature to keep everything smooth. While you're recording, you can capture still images at the press of a button, and manual controls such as white balance and ISO can be applied to videos as well. The dual-camera setup in the LG V20. Image via LG LG kept audiophiles in mind, too, as they're using a 32-bit "Quad DAC" (digital-to-analog converter) setup for all sound output modes, supporting lossless formats such as FLAC, DSD, AIFF, and ALAC. This is paired with a headphone amplifier that outputs twice the voltage of anything else on the market, so you won't need an external amp to do any serious sound editing. But one of the most interesting media features in the LG V20 is its three-microphone setup. This allows the phone to pinpoint background noise and create a clear audio recording when filming video, and LG claims that this will drastically improve the sound quality of clips recorded in loud environments like concerts and parties.
The First Phone to Ship with Android NougatLG seems to have a renewed vigor for prompt software updates, too, as the V20 is officially the first phone to ship with Android 7.0 Nougat preinstalled. This is an amazing feat, considering that LG has even beaten Google to the punch here.Nougat includes many improvements over Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and although LG puts a thick skin on top of Android (LG UX 5.0), these are all present. You'll get native split-screen mode with support for a wider range of apps than years past, Vulkan graphics API for better gaming performance, and a revamped set of emojis—likely well before Samsung, HTC, Motorola, and other manufacturers release their Nougat update.Don't Miss: All of the Cool New Things You Can Do with Android Nougat

SpecsIf there's anything to indicate that LG might be shifting its priorities from the G series to the V lineup, it's the specifications. All of the hardware here is top-notch, so the V20 is most definitely a flagship device from a technical standpoint.size: 6.29" (h) x 3.07" (w) x 0.30" (d) weight: 6.14 oz. screen: 5.7" LCD display resolution: 1440p QHD (513 PPI) processor: 2.15 GHz Snapdragon 820 RAM: 4 GB storage: 64 GB internal battery: 3200 mAh (removable) rear camera: 16 MP, f/1.8 lens (primary), 8 MP, f/2.4 wide-angle (secondary), 4K video front camera: 5 MP, f/1.9 wide-angle lens charging port: USB Type-C (Micro USB adapter included) colors: titan (black) and silver To top off those internals, the V20 sports a premium aluminum body with polycarbonate antenna windows at the top and bottom, reminiscent of the LG G5 from earlier this year. But this time, LG opted for a removable backplate instead of the slide-out battery from its modular design in the G5, which gives the phone a more traditional look and feel. The LG V20 features a metal build with removable backplate. Image via LG
Pricing & AvailabilityThe V2o isn't available just yet, but it's expected to hit shelves in the coming weeks. All major US carriers will be selling the new flagship, though LG didn't announce a price at their press event. They did note that for a limited time the handset will come with a free set of B&O Play H3 headphones (which usually cost typically cost upwards of $149.99). But if last year's LG V10's pricing is any indication, you can expect the V20 to start at roughly $700—a flagship price point for a true flagship phone.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

When it comes to getting your computer and smartphone to work well together, there's no service more robust and capable than AirDroid. For years, it's been the go-to tool for users looking to transfer files between their devices or access contact lists and call logs from their computer.Recently, AirDroid received its biggest update yet. Version 3.0 brings an enhanced UI to the Android app, but the biggest change here is a native program for both Windows and Mac.Not only does this program streamline many existing AirDroid functions like desktop SMS reply, but it can also allow for full control over your rooted Android device through a screen-mirroring window on your computer. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install AirDroid on Your Android DeviceAirDroid is available for free on the Google Play Store. Search it by name to get it installed on your Android device.

Step 2: Configure AirDroid on Your Android DeviceWhen you first launch AirDroid, you'll be asked to sign in or create an account. Tap the Sign in or Sign up button, then provide your AirDroid login credentials on the next screen. If you're new to AirDroid, you'll have to tap the Sign Up button on this second menu to create an account. Once you're signed in, AirDroid will ask you to enable its notification service. Tap Enable on this message, then you'll be taken to an Android settings menu. From here, tick the box next to the AirDroid entry, then press OK on the popup. From here, tap your device's back button to head out to AirDroid's main menu. In here, you'll find some of the various functions that allow you to interact with your computer, but there's another interesting option that needs further setup to use.To enable Find My Phone functionality, tap the corresponding entry in the list. From there, press on Turn on now, then hit Activate on the following menu. At this point, you'll be taken to another Android settings menu. Hit the Activate button here, then you'll be able to access your phone's location from AirDroid's PC or Mac interface.

Step 3: Install the AirDroid Program on Your Mac or PCWith the Android side of things all set up, it's time to install the standalone AirDroid program on your computer. Head to this link, then click the Download AirDroid Windows/Mac button to grab the installer file for the program. When the installer finishes downloading, go ahead and launch the file, then follow the prompts for installation. Once installation has finished, AirDroid will automatically launch. Use the same account credentials that you used in the Android setup process to log in. Once configured, you can use the AirDroid program for WIndows or Mac to send files to your Android, among other features. Notifications from your Android device will pop up in the system tray on your computer, and this includes text messages. To respond to a text message, simply click the notification and write your reply.

Step 4: Control Your Phone from Your Computer (Root Required)To control your phone with your computer's mouse and keyboard, you'll have to start up a screen-mirroring session. From AirDroid's main interface on your Mac or PC, click the User icon at the top-left, then click your device. AirDroid will ask for Superuser access on your Android device at this point. Tap Grant on the popup. (1) Desktop program informing you of the root request, (2) Superuser request on the Android device As the screen mirroring feature is in beta at the moment, this function is not without a few bugs and does not work on all devices. If your device is supported, you'll be able to control your phone or tablet using your computer's mouse and keyboard now. (1) AirDroid connecting to the phone, (2) Screen being mirrored to the computer With screen mirroring and desktop SMS response, AirDroid's new Windows and Mac programs add a lot of functionality to an already-robust service. What is your favorite new AirDroid feature? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on our Twitter or Facebook feeds.

How To: Use BlackBerry Locker to Keep Your Files & Apps Private

How To: Use BlackBerry Locker to Keep Your Files & Apps Private
Not all threats to our privacy come from hackers thousands of miles away. Often, we just want to keep our data safe from those around us, who may snoop in our phones or demand we reveal our secrets. That's where BlackBerry Locker comes in.Starting with the BlackBerry KEYone, every BlackBerry smartphone manufactured by TCL (including the new KEY2) comes preinstalled with BlackBerry Locker, a password-protected folder. Integrated into the hardware, BlackBerry Locker is a well-protected folder that can not only keep files locked away, but hide entire apps. It's with this level of protection that it can guard your most sensitive data.

Step 1: Password-Protect Your LockerWhen you first open Locker, you'll be prompted to create a password. This password is used in the encryption of your Locker and should be stored safely (preferably in a password manager). After inputting your password, BlackBerry Locker will ask if you wish to activate fingerprint authentication, which you can accept by placing your registered finger on the scanner. Once completed, your Locker is secured and will be populated with three icons: Photo Gallery, Private Files, and Firefox Focus (for private browsing).

Step 2: Protect & Hide Files and AppsAny app installed on your device can be relocated to BlackBerry Locker. After opening Locker, select the floating action button located in the bottom-right corner and choose "Add Apps." Select the apps you wish to move to the Locker, then tap the checkmark in the upper-right corner when you're finished. Now, to use the apps you moved, you must first unlock Locker.Locker can also hide these apps to prevent them from being found in other areas of your phone like your app drawer. By selecting the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the main page and choosing "Hide private apps," your apps will only be accessible via keyboard shortcuts and the Locker. Therefore, unless someone knows the shortcut, an unauthorized user won't even know about the app. And if they do know the shortcut, it's still password-protected.Files of any type can also be transferred to the Locker in a similar fashion. Using the same floating action button on the main page, select "Add Files." A new screen will emerge showing common file types, including "Installers" (APK) and "Archives" (ZIP). If the file you are looking for is one of those file types, you can select the corresponding option to reveal a list of all files of that type. However, you can also select "Others" to access all non-root folders to locate any file. When you move files into the Locker, they're automatically hidden from other areas of your phone, so you don't need to go through the additional step of hiding them like you did with the apps.

Step 3: Hide Locker (Optional)Let's say you hide personal apps and files in Locker and lend your phone to your significant other, believing it's safe and sound. If they are already suspicious and see the Locker app, they may demand access to it, revealing all the information you were trying to hide. Thankfully, this can be avoided by hiding Locker itself.Using the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the main page, choose "Advanced settings." Select the checkbox next to "Hide Locker in launcher" to hide the Locker app. With this feature enabled, Locker will no longer appear on the BlackBerry launcher or in your app drawer. You will need to either search for the app in the app drawer or use a custom shortcut to launch the app. Notice how I said BlackBerry launcher. This feature doesn't always work with third-party home screen apps such as Nova Launcher. For those, you will need to use the launcher's built-in ability to hide the app as well.Don't Miss: How to Hide Apps in Nova Launcher

Step 4: Launch Locker from the Lock Screen (Optional)If you'd like faster access to your Locker, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the main page and choose "Advanced settings." Tap the checkbox next to "Open Locker from lock screen."Once selected, you will be prompted to touch the fingerprint sensor with a finger. This finger is important, as it will be the only finger you can use to launch Locker from the lock screen. I would suggest not using the thumb you typically use to unlock the phone unless you want to always jump into Locker. I would also suggest to not use the other thumb if you often switch hands to grip the phone.Instead, use another finger (such as your index finger) so you can easily separate the authentication and not accidentally unlock the Locker unintentionally. You will need to register the new finger if it is currently not registered on your BlackBerry phone, but you can do that within the same prompt.

Step 5: Automatically Store Pictures in the Locker (Optional)One of the niftier features of Locker is the ability to send pictures directly to the Locker. Specifically, pictures you just captured. With the BlackBerry camera app open, lightly tap the space bar. The phone will capture the picture but will store the image directly in the Locker. When done correctly, you will see a key icon over a blurred out image indicating this is a protected picture. BlackBerry Locker offers top-tier protection for your local files and apps. Recognizing the need of their users to protect their information from people around them, BlackBerry provided the ability to not only password-protect their data, but to hide it from plain sight.
