HTC is one of the few OEMs that make it easy to unlock the bootloader on their devices. And while they do warn you that doing so voids your warranty, they don't tell you that it also prevents you from collecting promotions that come with their devices.It was recently announced that all HTC One owners would be eligible for free cloud storage, but seeing as having an unlocked bootloader prevented that promotion from being redeemed, most of us were left out in the cold. But as the old saying goes, "A closed mouth doesn't get fed." I went ahead and contacted HTC support, and sure enough, a few days later I was the proud owner of 100 GB of free Google Drive storage (for two years, anyway).Before starting out, you are going to need to locate your IMEI number, which will be on the original box your device came in, or can be located through Settings -> About -> Phone identity -> IMEI. When you have it, head over to the HTC customer support page and enter your device information into the form. In the message section, let them know that the HTC Drive offer is not being recognized by your device. You can also use HTC Live Chat, but it isn't available 24/7/365.Once the ticket has been processed, you will receive an email letting you know that a rep will be looking into your case. It took HTC about a day to generate the link I needed to claim my free storage, but after following the link, the cloud space was immediately credited to my account. This will work for every HTC One out there, so if you own multiple devices, don't be afraid to let them know you want what is rightfully yours, even if you did everything in your power to trick out your phone.

In a previous softModder tutorial, we installed CyanogenMod on our HTC Ones to approximate the look and feel of the Google Edition HTC One. Unfortunately, this rendered Beats and HTC's ImageChip (among other things) useless.This is no longer an issue, though, thanks to Android developer bigxie, who created a ROM based on the software taken directly from the Google Play Edition. This is an AOSP ROM that has been optimized for the HTC One (minus the IR blaster, although that's coming soon according to HTC). Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
NoteYou will not be able to get over-the-air updates with this ROM, so if you're looking for the complete factory-fresh Google Play Edition package, check out our other guide, which gives you the official bootloader, recovery, and OTAs.
Step 1: Root Your HTC OneFor this mod, you'll have to be rooted, so check out my previous guide on rooting the HTC One for instructions on that, if you're not already.
Note on Device CompatibilityUnfortunately, this only works for the unlocked, the AT&T, and the T-Mobile versions of the HTC One. Sorry, Sprint users! Although I'm sure a modified version of this software is coming your way soon enough!
Step 2: Download the ROMNow that you're rooted, download the ZIP file from bigxie and transfer it to your HTC One via USB or over the air.For updates on the ZIP file, check out bigxie's thread over on XDA.
Step 3: Back Up Your DataIf you've read our rooting tutorial, you'll already know how to do this. Otherwise, head on over and check out Step 4 for instructions, and check out our guide on backing up your apps and app data, too.

Step 4: Wipe Your DeviceIf you created a backup, you'll already be in the recovery, so just go back to TWRP's main menu. Otherwise, press and hold Power and Volume Down, then select RECOVERY and press Power. Image via wonderhowto.com Tap Wipe and swipe to confirm using the default settings.

Step 5: Install the Google Play Edition ROMGo back to TWRP's main menu once again, and tap Install. Navigate to the directory where you saved your ROM. Tap the file you want to install, and swipe to confirm. Finally, Tap Reboot

Step 6: Enjoy Stock Android, Beats, & Better PicturesThe stock aAndroid experience is, in my opinion, much more cohesive than HTC's Sense. Now you can have that without sacrificing some of the phone's popular features.Note that the camera is actually easier to use than the stock 4.2 camera because you can navigate by tapping, instead of having to tap and hold. Hopefully an IR transmitter fix is coming soon, along with the camera fixes coming in the Sense ROM's 4.2 update. Understanding RAMAll of the files that make up your phone's operating system, as well as your apps, games, music, pictures, and videos, are saved in the device's storage partition (with computers, we call the storage partition the "hard drive," if you're familiar with that term). When you want to access one of these files, they are called up from the storage partition and sifted through your processor (CPU) to be organized in a way that the other pieces of hardware in your phone can understand.So let's say you want to play a video. The video file itself goes from your storage partition, and over through the processor, where it is then split into streams of binary numbers. Those binary numbers are then sent on to your phone's audio and video components, which only "speak" binary and wouldn't have understood the original file without it being processed first. Ultimately, pixels are displayed on your screen, and sound waves are projected through your speaker.This is a very simplified explanation, but it gives you a general idea of what happens when files move from your storage to your processor and beyond. But where does RAM come into play?Well RAM (also referred to as memory) is like a funnel that sits between your phone's storage and its CPU. Another way of thinking about it is like the cordoned-off line outside of a concert, where the concert itself is your CPU. "Files" in "RAM" waiting to get into the "CPU". Keeping with the concert analogy, imagine that your storage partitions are like the homes and apartments in the rest of the city outside of the concert. Some people (files) have to travel a long way to get to the concert, others live next door—but once they're in line (RAM), it'll only be a brief moment before they all make their way into the concert (CPU).
Why RAM Is Important for Real-World PerformanceWhen factors like speed and performance of RAM are equal (which they usually are within the same generation of electronics), your device will almost always perform better if it simply has more RAM. If that line in front of the concert had four lanes and four ticket-takers instead of just one, it would move a lot faster, wouldn't it?With smartphones, many operating system files need to be in RAM at all times. Otherwise, when you pressed your home button, for instance, there would be a huge delay while the appropriate files from your launcher were located in storage and moved to RAM.So the OS occupies a decent chunk of RAM by itself, but then there's also the factor of multitasking. When you're switching back and forth between two apps, you don't want the first one to get kicked out of RAM while you're using the second, because when you switched back, it would have to be completely reloaded from storage again. That reloading time would give you the sense that your phone was just slow.So let's say your phone just had tons and tons of RAM—so much RAM that it almost didn't need storage, because every file could fit in RAM. Wouldn't things run a lot faster if that were the case? Actually, yes they would.But this isn't possible due to constraints like the cost of RAM and the fact that current CPUs can only handle up to a certain amount of RAM. Nonetheless, more RAM is almost always better.Take the OnePlus 3 as an example. It's a budget smartphone that costs nearly half the price of flagship devices from the same generation, but it consistently smoked the competition in real-world performance tests like the one in the video below. Why? Because the OnePlus 3 has 6 GB of RAM, whereas every other phone from the same generation had only 4 GB or fewer.
As you can see in the video, the OnePlus 3 really started to shine when the tester performed the same actions a second time. It took a minute and 31 seconds to open all of those apps and games the first time, because the associated files had to be transferred from storage to RAM. But on the second lap, the same apps and games opened in less than 26 seconds because the OnePlus 3 had enough RAM to keep all of the needed files in memory.Bottom line, having more RAM means that the files you want to access will usually be optimized and ready for processing faster than they would if you had less RAM. And when it comes to multitasking performance, RAM is the single most important factor.
How Much RAM Should Your Next Phone Have?In 2017, many flagship Android smartphones sold in America, like the Samsung Galaxy S8, LG V30, OnePlus 4, and HTC 11, will be using the latest and greatest processor: the Snapdragon 835. This is because the CPU's manufacturer, Qualcomm, holds many exclusive patents that pertain to cellular data connections used by carriers in the US, so the 835 will be the fastest available processor that also happens to work with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon out of the box.This puts the 2017 generation of flagship devices on a level playing field in terms of raw processing power—but what about RAM? Interestingly enough, the Snapdragon 835 has a new feature that comes into play here.Unlike last year's top-of-the-line processors, which only supported up to 6 GB of RAM, the Snapdragon 835 will allow for as much as 8 GB of RAM. While viewing notifications, I have a nasty habit of accidentally hitting Clear and getting rid of them all before I actually have a chance to read them. There is an easy way to view the notification history on Android, but if you turn off or reboot your Samsung Galaxy S4, the history is wiped clean.To solve this annoying issue, try using an app called Notification Saver from developer Prasant Ghantasala. It saves all notifications, even after rebooting, and also lets you search and sort through them by app, title, or text.For another way to save your full notifications history, as well as export it, check out Notifications Logger.
Open up the app and grant it notification access to get started. The main page will display notifications for Today, but it can easily be separated by week, month, or all.Tapping on a notification will enlarge it to expose more information. To search by app or specific text, tap on the search bar in the top right-hand corner. Enter the app's settings by tapping the Menu key. From there, you can change the default view and set the limit of how many notifications are saved. From now on, missing a notification is a thing of the past. Accidentally swipe it away or clear them all? No problem. Notification Saver will store all your notifications and make it easier to track them down. Boom, problem solved.

This year we have quite a selection for the Galaxy S9/S9+ combo. In addition to past fan favorites like the LED and Clear-View covers, the new Hyperknit and Protective Covers join the lineup. Many of these official cases have unique features, but also carry a high price tag.

Silicone Protective CaseBy far the most basic case in the Samsung lineup, adding minimal bulk to the S9. The Silicone Case is a simple one-piece case made with a grippy silicone material. This case provides sufficient top and bottom lips around front, protecting the infinity display from scratches when the phone is placed face-down.Buy Samsung's Silicone Protective Case from Amazon The protection from this case is middle of the road. You will get shock absorption from the silicone, but the bottom of the phone is exposed. The Silicone Case does accommodate a number of tempered glass screen protectors, a great option to improve the level of protection. Price: $29.99 Pros: Cost effective, minimal bulk, works with most tempered glass protectors. Cons: Not a maximum protection case, no added features, exposes bottom of the phone.

Alcantara CaseAnother simple one piece case, but with a more luxurious feel. The soft Alcantara fabric covers the inside and outside of this case. The buttons are much improved over the Silicone Case. Tactile and responsive, the buttons on the Alcantara are more enjoyable to use.Buy Samsung's Alcantara Case from Amazon Protection is slightly reduced here with the less shock-resistant Alcantara material. With a more expensive price tag, the Alcantara is all about the luxurious look and feel, if that's not your thing, it might not be the case for you. If you can overcome this minor annoyance, this case is one of the best in Samsung's OEM lineup. Price: $39.99 Pros: Great protection, excellent kickstand, extra grip. Cons: A bit uncomfortable to hold at first.

Hyperknit CaseMolded in the same shape as the Silicone and Alcantara covers, the Hyperknit Case adds a grippy knit material to the outside of the phonee. Button covers are very similar to the Alcantara cover, with a metallic appearance and tactile response.Buy Samsung's Hyperknit Case from Amazon On the Hyperknit cover, the buttons seem almost too responsive, occasionally activating Bixby or volume controls on accident. The knit material also accumulates lint when stored in a pocket for a long period of time. This is not a deal breaker, but something worth considering. With the protection is nearly equal, the Alcantara cover seems like a better option unless you absolutely prefer the knit texture. Price: $34.99 Pros: Minimal and slim, extra grip. Cons: Not maximum protection, knit accumulates lint, over-responsive buttons.

The front cover displays LED notifications, time, alarms, and lets you dismiss or accept incoming calls. With a front speaker cutout, it's incredibly easy to take calls without opening the cover. Choosing between the LED and S-View cover is mostly an aesthetic matter, but the LED Case is likely to age better over time. Toast notifications are a type of pop-up alert built into Android, letting us know when an app has performed a certain action. Whether it's Gmail saving a draft or Firefox opening a new tab, toasts are meant to be informational while not being totally intrusive.However, there are times when toast pop-ups are somewhat vague, i.e. error messages. There are occasions where a background app displays a toast in the foreground, which can lead to some confusion if we don't know where that alert is originating from.Luckily, there are a couple of useful Xposed modules that we can use to pinpoint exactly where toasts are coming from. We've previously shown you how to get KitKat-style toasts on your Jelly Bean Galaxy S4, now let's toss some more ingredients into the mix and add the app name or icon to your toast messages. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Make Sure You're ReadyIf you haven't already done so, either through previous softModder guides, or your own modding endeavors, you'll need to knock these prerequisites out of the way:Enable "Unknown Sources" Download and install Xposed Framework

Step 2: Choose How You Want Your ToastFrom the Xposed Installer's main menu, tap on Download to get to the repository of modules. You can choose between two different modules to spiff up those toast messages, brought to you by some crafty developers, gabcas and MohammadAG. Buttered Toast, by gabcas, keeps it clean and simple by adding just the name of the app to the top of the toast. For the more graphically inclined, MohammadAG's Burnt Toast adds the app's icon on the left side of the toast. Once you've made your decision, tap the Download button. You can download and use both, though you may find the alert somewhat cluttered and awkward.

Step 3: Install the Toast Module of Your ChoiceThe installer will pop up automatically once the download completes. All you have to do is tap the Install button in the lower-right corner, then Done when it finishes.

Step 4: Activate Your Toasty ModuleAfter installation, you'll get a notification from Xposed, prompting you to activate the module. Tap on it to head into Xposed's Modules page (also accessible from the Xposed Installer's main menu). Locate whichever module you chose, either Burnt Toast or ButteredToast, and check the box next to it. Reboot or soft reboot your GS4 for the module to go into effect.

Step 5: Enjoy Your Delicious, New-Look Toasts!When your phone boots up, keep an eye near the bottom of your phone. Usually one of the first toast notifications you get after booting is when you connect to your Wi-Fi network (if you're in range of one). For months, consumers have been itching to know whether it will be Samsung or Apple that has the first in-screen fingerprint scanner in their next smartphone. Now, reputable researcher Jiutang Pan has taken to Weibo to report that the answer is neither. According to Pan, China's Vivo will be the first to launch with the fingerprint reader embedded into the screen within the next few months.It seemed likely that Samsung would be winning this race with the Galaxy Note 8. However, we reported that Samsung made an official statement to Naver that they decided to discontinue their work on the feature in the Galaxy Note 8 due to technical limitations at this time. This left fans disappointed and meekly hoping for some chance that the iPhone 8 wouldn't let them down on this.But with no word from Apple, people should turn their hopes to Vivo now.According to Pan, the new phone from Vivo will be released before the iPhone 8, meaning that if the reports are true they would officially beat Apple to this long awaited feature. He also believes, however, that the iPhone 8 will also have the feature.With his report, Pan also attached a four-second video presumably of himself testing Vivo's new phone. In the video, we can clearly see that he opens the phone with his finger, pressing it onto a fingerprint icon on the screen. When the phone is unlocked, the icon disappears as well.
