How To: Monitor System Resources Right from the Notification Tray on Your Samsung Galaxy S3

Anyone who uses a computer on a regular basis probably knows how to access the task manager to check system resources and usage stats. However, on a Samsung Galaxy S3 or other Android device, it may not be so obvious. There's no equivalent to Control-Alt-Delete, but it's still fairly easy to monitor running processes and battery usage. To see your running processes, just head on over to Application Manager in your Settings and slide over to Running. To see your battery stats, just head to Battery in Settings. These two stats are nice to have, but they don't give you as much information as Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac). If you've ever wished you could see all the details of what your GS3 is really doing, Android dev iattilagy has just the app for you. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

How to Monitor Your Android System BetterIf you're more partial to the way system resources are monitored on a computer, you should check out a free app called Usemon. It displays Android's usage stats in graphs very similar to the ones you'd see on your laptop, only in much more detail than Android's stock OS gives you. These graphs calculate CPU, RAM, and network status in real-time, very similar to Task Manager and Activity Monitor. Usemon supports devices running Android 4.0 and higher and can also display multiple CPUs for folks with multi-core devices.

The Easy Access Mini Graph in the Notification TrayOne of the coolest features on Usemon is the easy access Notification tray placement. With a simple swipe down on the screen you can get a quick glance at the stats for some of your phone's most vital information. Not a lot of apps have this feature. It makes keeping track of your usage super easy—no need to go into your settings and search for the information you want.

SettingsIf you slide the top menu all the way to the left, you'll see the Settings tab. From here you can pick and choose what graphs you wish to display, select the resolution of the graphs, and even change the color scheme.
The Graphs Available in UsemonUsemon lets you monitor CPU, CPU Frequency, CPU Info, RAM, Network, and Disk Activity. For more information on what all of these options actually show you, Danny has a great guide over on Nexus 7 softModder that explains each feature in detail.
How Do You Like Usemon?Usemon is super easy to use and great for folks who want to keep track of exactly how their system resources are being used. Give it a try and let us know what you think in the comments.

How To: Send & Receive Texts from Any Computer with Android Messages

How To: Send & Receive Texts from Any Computer with Android Messages
It's no secret that Android has a messaging problem. iPhone users can turn to iMessage as a one-stop shop for all their messaging needs — features like read receipts and the ability to text from a computer have been standard with Apple products for quite some time. Android has no such solution, but Google's looking to fix that with a huge update to the Android Messages app.If you're not familiar with Android Messages, it's the de-facto default SMS app for Android. Though it doesn't come pre-installed on every Android phone, you can simply install the app and start using it to send and receive SMS and MMS messages within seconds. While it's a nice messaging app in general, and it already supports the new RCS standard that's set replace SMS, the feature Google just added is what really sets it apart. Now, by scanning a QR code, you can pair Android Messages with any computer to text from your regular phone number on your laptop or desktop.Don't Miss: Get iOS 12's New Quick QR Scanner on Any Android Phone

Step 1: Update to the Latest Version of Android MessagesTo try this out, you'll need to update to Android Messages version 3.3.043 or higher. The update is currently in the process of rolling out to the Play Store, so you may not see it yet, but check the following link first:Update Android Messages on the Google Play Store If the update isn't available yet, you can sideload it now. Make sure you have Unknown Sources enabled, then head to the link below. There are six variants of the APK, so you'll need to know your processor type and find your screen density value to see which version to download. Once you've grabbed the right APK file, launch it from your notification shade and press "Install" to update Android Messages.Download the latest version of Android Messages (3.3.043) from APKmirror There is also a server-side component to the update, so even after updating, you may need to wait for Google to flip the switch on your account before you can use Android Messages on your computer. This process could take up to a week, according to Google. For those not wanting to wait, XDA has an in-depth tutorial to force-enable the feature, but you need root access.

Step 2: Link Your Phone to Your ComputerNext, head over to the new Android Messages website on your computer. The website will work on Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Opera. If you plan on messaging from your computer often, this link is definitely worth bookmarking:Visit Android Messages on the web to text from your computer Image via Android Messages Now, open the Android Messages app on your phone. If everything went smoothly with the app update and the server-side update, all you'll need to do is tap the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner and choose "Messages for web." If you don't see this option, you'll have to wait for the server-side update. If the "Messages for web" option is present, go ahead and tap it. On the next screen, tap "Scan QR code," then simply scan the QR code on your computer's screen. After following the prompts, you'll see a message stating "Connected to Messages for web." The app will now show your signed-in computers — take note of this menu, as you can use it to disconnect this computer later if you need to. Images by Mighty Quinn Apps/Imgur

Step 3: Send & Receive Messages from Your ComputerOnce connected, the browser will bring up a new page with all active conversations to the left. Selecting one will bring up the conversation to the right. To start a new message, select the "+" button in the top-left corner of your screen. Type the name, phone number, or email of the individual you wish to communicate with. Once inputted, write a message in the text box below. Image by Mighty Quinn Apps/Imgur You will notice a few new features with the web version that borrow from other Google-developed apps. You can perform a GIF search using the smiling picture icon located in the text box (the second icon from the left). There is also a dark mode for those who prefer it, which can be enabled by selecting the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of the window and selecting "Settings." Choose "Enable dark theme" to turn on dark mode. Image by Mighty Quinn Apps/Imgur Now, we're finally starting to reach feature parity with iMessage on Android. There's still a long way to go, but once Google's new RCS Universal Profile gets implemented by more carriers, we'll have most of iMessages features through the Android Messages app and this desktop site.Special thanks to Kieron Quinn, AKA Quinny898, the developer behind Mighty Quinn Apps. We're still waiting on the server-side update ourselves, so the screenshots above all came from him. How To: Find Nearby Beer by Emoji on Your iPhone

How To: Find Nearby Beer by Emoji on Your iPhone

Emojis, for better or for worse, have essentially taken over online forms of communication. And now, thanks to a recently discovered feature in iOS, they are going to change the way you search for nearby places. The process is actually very simple. Let's say you're looking for a place to grab some beers with some friends. Simply open up Spotlight Search on your iPhone, then type in the beer emoji to get instant recommendations for bars and beer-friendly restaurants in your area. You can do the same for pizza, post offices... whatever! As of right now, not all emojis are supported, and Spotlight Suggestions need to work in your country.

Step 1: Enable the Emoji KeyboardBy default, Apple enables the Emoji keyboard in newer versions of iOS. If for some reason you don't have the Emoji keyboard available when you tap on the globe icon, you'll have to add it manually. To do so, check out our instructions for adding new keyboards linked below and make sure to select "Emoji" from the list:Don't Miss: How to Add, Reorder & Switch Keyboards on Your iPhone If you don't like this Emoji keyboard, you can use a third-party keyboard like Gboard, Mimuum, or Word Flow, which have emojis built right in.
Step 2: Search SpotlightSwipe down on any home screen page for a Quick Search, or swipe to the farthest left page on your home screen to bring up Spotlight Suggestions. (In the new iOS 10, you can also do a search Spotlight via the Notification Center.) Then open the Emoji keyboard by tapping on the globe icon, or by selecting the emoji list in your third-party keyboard.
Step 3: Embrace the EmojiNow simply select the corresponding emoji for whatever you want to search for. We used the beer example already, but we've got some more examples below to give you an idea of the power an emoji holds. You can search for clothing, pizzas, tacos, schools, banks, post offices, movie theaters, train stops, parks, and more.Spotlight will suggest a few nearby places that match the emoji criteria, with the option to tap on them to view more information or open the Maps app for even more locations. I should also note that, in some cases, an emoji will give redundant results. For example, there are a few different beer emojis, and selecting any one of them brings up basically the same results.

Beer, Cocktails

Tacos, Ramen, Sushi, Indian Food

Ice Cream, Cake, Candy, Donuts

Diners, Burgers, Pizza, Pasta

Coffee, Smoothies, Restaurants, Grocery Stores

Clothing, Shoe Stores

Banks, Barber Shops, Pharmacies, Post Offices

Movies, Transit Stops, Hotels, Current Weather Conditions

Party Supplies, Apple Store This list is quite long, but far from exhaustive. But now you know just how powerful emojis are; They aren't just fun, but can actually help you search for things more quickly, which is super useful when traveling abroad in a foreign country were you might not know the correct word for something using the native language.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

How To: Turn Your iPhone's Keyboard into a Trackpad for Easier Cursor Placement

How To: Turn Your iPhone's Keyboard into a Trackpad for Easier Cursor Placement
Ever since 3D Touch's introduction in iOS 9 for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, a little-known trick for moving the cursor around and selecting text was built into Apple's stock keyboard. Since then, it works on all iPhones models with 3D Touch baked in, leaving the iPhone 5S, 6, 6 Plus, and SE out in the cold. However, iOS 12 makes this "trackpad" work on all iPhones, 3D Touch or not.

Placing a Cursor from the Text Field ItselfIn any app where you enter text, such as Messages, and Notes, and Safari, to place the cursor, which Apple refers to as an "insertion point," in a specific spot of the text you're editing, just tap where you want it. If it doesn't end up in the right place, you can tap-and-hold to bring up the magnifying bubble that increases precision. When you let go, you'll also see selection options, including "Select," which selects the nearest word or number, and "Select All," which selects everything. With and without magnifier (left), and a closeup without magnifier (right). While all iPhone users can take advantage of this method for placing the cursor, it was the only thing that could be done on an iPhone 5S, 6, 6 Plus, and SE running iOS 11 and under. Any iPhone that has 3D Touch built in can access a trackpad that makes this easier by applying pressure anywhere on Apple's stock keyboard. But if you're running iOS 12 on one of those non-3D Touch iPhones, you're finally able to access the trackpad too.

Placing the Cursor Using the Keyboard's TrackpadYou'll need to have an iPhone that supports 3D Touch and is running iOS 9 or higher if you want to use pressure to activate the trackpad. If you're using an iPhone 5S, 6, 6 Plus, or SE, you'll need to running iOS 12 or higher to mimic this effect.Don't Miss: How to Download iOS 12 on Your iPhone Right Now To unlock the hidden trackpad in the stock Apple keyboard, either press anywhere on the keyboard (using 3D Touch) or tap-and-hold on the spacebar, until you the keyboard turns a light gray color. Then, while still holding your finger on the screen (you can let loose of the pressure if you used 3D Touch), move your finger around to move the insertion point to the right spot in the text. Using 3D Touch (left) vs. holding space bar (right). Tip: Some third-party keyboards let you turn the keyboard into a trackpad, such as Gboard, but in this example, it works a little bit different. In Gboard, you need to 3D Touch on any of the letter keys to bring up the trackpad, then you go left or right to move the cursor accordingly. You can't move it vertically by swiping up and down, though, like you can with Apple's keyboard.Don't Miss: Everything You Need to Know About iOS 12 for iPhone

Selecting Text More Easily with the TrackpadIf you have an iPhone that supports 3D Touch, you can also do a bit more with this trackpad. So far, iOS 12 does not appear to have any way to simulate these selection tools with the trackpad for non-3D Touch devices, but dragging the cursor is a good first start. And you can also fall back on the regular way to select text.To select text with 3D Touch, without lifting your finger off the keyboard trackpad, press deeper to select a word. If you press a second time, you should be able to select that whole sentence. Pressing three times should select the entire paragraph. Personally, I never have luck with the second and third presses, so if you run into the same issue, you can just press once, then drag to select all the text you want. Select one word with another press (left) and drag to select more (right). If you don't have 3D Touch or don't want to use 3D Touch on the trackpad, you can double-tap a word or number. To select more text, drag each bar (the "grab points") on the left and right side of the word or number to select a bigger text snippet. This applies in text entry fields only. When you're just reading in apps such as Apple News, long-press on a word to select. Double-tap to select a word (left) or long-press word (right), then drag the points. Also, when in text entry fields, you can also place the cursor, then tap on it to bring up the selection menu to choose "Select" or "Select All."Don't Miss: 50+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: All the Ways to Get Water Out of Your iPhone's Speaker

How To: All the Ways to Get Water Out of Your iPhone's Speaker
Apple Watch owners know there's a built-in way to remove water from the device's speaker. However, even though modern iPhones are IP67 and IP68 water resistant, there's no official way to deal with water-clogged speakers that can muffle audio and cause prolonged damage if not ejected. Older iPhone models have it even worse, but there are some easy things you can do to get that water out.Just because your iPhone is IP67 or IP68 doesn't mean it's waterproof. No iPhone is waterproof — IP67 and IP68 are simply ratings that specify those iPhones are capable of handling water submersions up to a certain depth for a certain amount of time. We in no way recommend intentionally submerging your iPhone underwater to test the tips in this article, as Apple does not cover water damage in its warranties.Don't Miss: What IP68 Water Resistance Really Means for Your iPhone
Now, because all iPhones are not created equal, you'll want to be cautious which of the following methods you use with which iPhone.iPhone 7 and newer: Skip Method 5 below. Opening an iPhone with an IP67 or IP68 rating will lose its water resistance since much of the resistance comes from special glues applied when sealing the device. iPhone 6S/6S Plus: Think about skipping Method 5, as well, if possible. While not IP-rated, 6S models have some waterproofing technology, including a strong adhesive that will erode when opening the device. If the first four methods don't work for you, you can try 5, but just keep this in mind. iPhone 6 and older: Use any method listed here. Because these iPhones are not built to resist water, opening the devices won't affect resistance in the slightest. If Method 1–4 don't work out for you, feel free to dive into the rest as well.

Method 1: Use a ShortcutShortcuts turn iOS from a simple, locked-down system into a jungle gym of possibility. Since its predecessor, Workflow, shortcuts have enabled users to create powerful programs capable of doing nearly anything on an iPhone. When it comes to getting lodged water out of your iPhone's speakers, you can build your own shortcut workflow, but others have already done all the work for you.One of those options, developed by Josh0678, is a great tool that pulses water out of your iPhone's speaker using low-frequency sound waves. It acts much like the Apple Watch function and begs the question of why Apple doesn't include it as a built-in feature in the first place on iPhones. Nonetheless, we've got a shortcut to do the dirty work. Read more about it.Full Instructions: This Shortcut Ejects Water Out of Your iPhone Speaker

Method 2: Use an AppWhile shortcuts are great, they're also unregulated to a certain degree. Anyone can create and share a shortcut, regardless of content or execution. Plus, you need the Shortcuts app to use it. If you don't plan on making or using any other shortcuts, it might be better to just install a water-ejecting app. This way, you also get some peace of mind knowing that it's met Apple's rigorous App Store standards. The app in question is called Sonic, and does more or less the same thing as the shortcut, using frequencies to eject any water inside the speaker. The main difference here is that you can adjust the frequency yourself. Read more about it.Full Instructions: This App Gets Water Out of Your iPhone Speaker

Method 3: Use a WebsiteYou don't need an app or shortcut to gain access to water-repelling sounds. Instead, try a tone generator site, such as Szynalski's Online Tone Generator. This site will allow you to manually set and play a frequency on your iPhone, much like the app in Method 2, which will shake the water out of your speaker until you tap "Stop." https://www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/ While the creator of the water ejection shortcut doesn't specify what frequency they use, we've found it to be approximately 162 Hz. That makes sense since we've seen recommendations to set the app to 165 Hz. Set your frequency to that range, tap "Play," and watch your water issues spray away.
Method 4: Use GravityWhen all else fails, gravity can be your friend when water isn't. So grab a paper towel, and point your iPhone's speakers at it. You might see water come out on its own, being soaked up by the paper towel. If not, give the top of your iPhone a few gentle smacks. Finally, let the iPhone air dry in a well-ventilated room.If water entered other areas of the iPhone, and it's not IP67 or IP68 rated, make sure to power it off first. You may also have better luck with the next method.

Method 5: Use Silica GelIf your iPhone isn't water resistant, dropping it into liquid is sure to put you into a panic. You won't be thinking about simply shaking the water out of your speaker, you want to save your iPhone. And what's the easier way to save a water-damaged iPhone? Raw, uncooked, rice, right? Wrong.Contrary to popular belief, rice isn't the best way to soak up water. "Wait a second," you say. "I've seen it bring back iPhones! Rice works!" Sure, rice works but not well. At least, not compared to other options. If you really want to prevent an untimely death for your iPhone, you'll want to go with something that's proven to best even the most absorbent rice your grocer can provide.More Info: Uncooked Rice Isn't the Way to Save Your iPhone Instead, try silica gel. Those "DO NOT EAT" packets you see with some deliveries are there because they keep moisture away from your purchases. That trick can be applied to your water-logged iPhone as well. Just know, it's most effective when opening the iPhone itself, so only try this on non-IP-rated devices.Submerging the iPhone in silica gel beads is the best way, but you always run the risk of popping some of the beads if you're not careful. If you're worried about that, silica gel packets will also help suck up water. On Amazon: 1.2 Lbs Premium Orange Indicating Silica Gel Beads Image by multifacetedgirl/Pixabay

Method 6: Use a Repair ShopFor more severe cases, you can't rely on inexperience. When the water hits the fan, you want to follow the advice of someone who's been there many, many times. Enter our resident repair tech, Amboy Manalo, who's had plenty of experience with drowned smartphones, and as such, knows exactly what you should do in these situations. The best thing to do for a non-IP-rated iPhone? Turn off the phone, don't plug it in, and take it into a repair shop. Technicians like Amboy have seen these issues a thousand times over and will know the best steps to take for the situation. It may just need professional drying or you may need to get a brand new speaker — it depends on wet things are.You likely won't need to use this method if you have a newer iPhone rated at IP67 or IP68 iPhone, so this mainly concerns older models.More Info: Protect Your iPhone from Water Like a Technician A water-damaged iPhone 5s. Note the corrosion and rust. Image by Amboy Manalo/Gadget Hacks Water and iPhones may now mix better than ever before, but stuff still happens. Whether it be water damage, a pavement pummeling, or your iPhone simply stops waking up — oh yes, that happens — if you don't have a plan in place, your photos, messages, and more are as good as gone. These discussions are always an excellent opportunity to stress the importance of regular backups. You can always buy another iPhone. How To: Save Custom Shooting Presets in Filmic Pro So You Don't Have to Adjust Settings Later for Similar Shots

How To: Save Custom Shooting Presets in Filmic Pro So You Don't Have to Adjust Settings Later for Similar Shots

Filmic Pro has a superb suite of professional settings — bit rate, frame rate, and mic choice, to name a few — which can enable you to capture the best footage possible. But different shots require different setups, and it can be frustrating to change settings on the fly. Filmic Pro lets you skip that whole process by saving your favorite settings as presets for quick and easy access.Custom presets are remarkably simple to create and equally simple to use. Filmic Pro lets you open presets either in-app or, if you use an iPhone, directly from the home screen. That means you'll be ready to shoot within seconds of each scene change, not minutes, with no risk of forgetting to enable or disable a specific setting. However, not all settings can be saved in custom presets. We reached out to Filmic Pro for clarification, and you can see its response below. There may be more settings you can't keep, but for the most part, the majority of them can be a part of your custom presets.Don't Miss: How to Automate Focus, Zoom & Exposure Pulls in Filmic ProIn general, anything pertaining to resolution, frame rate, lens hardware, and a number of parameters in the 'Device' menu can be saved to presets. Exposure, White Balance, and Focus parameter values cannot be saved to custom presets that persist between app sessions.

1. Saving PresetsSaving presets in Filmic Pro requires one thing: that all of the settings you want are enabled or disabled first. That's because once you make the preset, all current compatible settings rope into that preset. Just double check that everything currently set is precisely the way you want it for your preset. You can't edit presets later, but you can delete and add new ones.Once you're sure, tap the cog at the bottom, then select "Presets." Here, tap "Save Current Settings as Preset." Now, choose a name for your preset, something you'll be able to instantly identify it as, e.g., "4K 60fps" or "1080p Time-Lapse." When you've chosen a name, tap "Save." You'll then see your new preset in the list.

2. Accessing Saved PresetsThere are two easy ways to access any of your presets. Firstly, you can access your presets from the same "Presets" menu we saw in section 1, via the cog icon. Tap the preset you'd like to load, then tap "Load" from the pop-up.Secondly, on iOS devices with 3D Touch only, you can access your most recently used presets via quick actions on the app's home screen icon. Press deeply on the icon, and you'll find up to three of your presets here, in addition to the default Filmic Pro preset. Select the preset you'd like, and Filmic Pro will open with that preset's settings loaded. You'll know which preset is currently in effect because Filmic Pro denotes a check mark next to it via the "Presets" menu. If you see multiple check-marked presets, those presets happen to be duplicates.
3. Deleting or Renaming PresetsIt's easy to rename and delete any preset you want at any time from the "Presets" menu. Unfortunately, renaming presets only works for iOS at this time.

Delete or Rename on iPhoneOn an iPhone, to delete a preset, swipe left on it to reveal the "Delete" option. Tap that. Alternatively, if you swipe left too far and too fast, you will delete the preset right away. You will not be warned before deleting, so make sure you really want to delete the preset before you tap or swipe. To rename a preset, swipe left (but not fast) on it to reveal the "Rename" option. Tap it, and Filmic Pro will launch the keyboard. Type your new name, then tap "Rename" to complete the process.

Delete or Rename on AndroidOn an Android phone, it works pretty much the same way as on iOS. To delete a preset, swipe left on it to reveal the "Delete" option. Tap that. You will need to tap "Delete" on the prompt to confirm, a nice failsafe in case you went too quickly and selected the wrong one.To rename a preset, swipe left on it to reveal the "Rename" option. Tap it, and Filmic Pro will launch the keyboard. Type your new name, then tap "OK" to complete the process. How To: Keep Your Android Device's Screen Wide Awake with Wakey

How To: Keep Your Android Device's Screen Wide Awake with Wakey

Google Play continues to grow faster than the iOS App Store and may even hit the million app mark before Apple does. In the Android market, you'll find apps for everything, ranging from augmented reality multiplayer games like Ingress to wireless computer mouse apps like WiFi Mouse. What the Android market does lack, though, are applications that keep your device's screen awake. There are a few, like Screebl Lite, which controls your screen based on orientation, and Keep Screen, which keeps your screen awake for select apps, but there are no pure screen-monitoring apps. So, what if you don't want your Android device to fall asleep at all? For that, there's Wakey by DoubleP, which keeps your Android screen awake for any length of time you desire—perfect for reading, testing other apps, and really anything that may cause your screen to fall asleep. Image via googleusercontent.com Wakey is a very minimal app that features a light bulb, which you can turn off and on with a simple tap. Switching the light bulb on keeps the phone screen awake until you go back to the app and turn the bulb off. This is a much easier alternative to having to search through the settings menu to toggle this feature off and on. Images via ggpht.com It's free on Google Play, so if this sounds like something that could be useful to you, head on over and download Wakey for Android.

How To: Run Any Android App on Your Mac

How To: Run Any Android App on Your Mac
One of the best features of Android is the fact that it's open-source, giving developers the ability to use it on pretty much any device they can think of, like on a Windows PC using Andy. That's what drove the creators behind the Android-x86 project to port over the mobile OS to any computer running an Intel processor.Their newest release, dubbed Android-x86 4.4-r1, allows anyone with a compatible computer to run Android 4.4.2 KitKat. Since all newer Macs come with an Intel chip, they can all run this release without any problems. While it would be great to be able to install KitKat through BootCamp, that isn't currently possible, so instead, we will use the emulation software VirtualBox to run Android on top of Mac OS X. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Before Getting StartedWhile this Android port can run on pretty much any Intel-based Mac, you will still need to make sure you have at least 10GB of free hard drive space and 4GB of RAM. If not, you will run into performance issues. The Android ISO file and VirtualBox are both free, so go ahead and download both from the links below.Android-x86 4.4-r1 VirtualBox

Step 1: Install VirtualBoxNow that you have both files downloaded, you are free to install VirtualBox. Just double-click on the VirtualBox.dmg file and follow the installation guide.

Step 2: Set Up Your New Virtual MachineOpen up VirtualBox after it finishes installing, then tap the New icon on the top left to create a new virtual machine. You can name the machine whatever you want, just be sure to set the Type to Linux and Version to Other Linux. On the next dialog box, enter 512 MB for memory size, then tap Continue. Select the create a virtual hard drive now option and choose VDI as the file type. Under Storage on physical hard drive, select Dynamically allocated. The next screen will allow you choose how much hard drive space you want to give to your new Android machine. I chose to set it to 8GB, but you can select any size you want. After that is done, you're pretty much all set, so tap Create.

Step 3: Create Bootable PartitionYou have now successfully created your virtual machine, so now you'll need to actually create a partition to install Android on to. To start that process, select the new machine from the left sidebar, then click Start. From the installation select screen, locate your Android.iso file, and when that boots up, select Installation, then Create/Modify Partitions. On the next screen, select the New option, then choose Primary as the partition type, making sure it says 8587.19 MB under Size. After it has created the partition, you will be brought back to the partition screen where you will need to highlight your new partition and select Bootable, then Write. Upon choosing Write, you will need to type yes to confirm the changes, then select Quit once finished.

Step 4: Install AndroidAll that is left to do now is install Android, so select sda1 Linux VBOX HARDDISK from the box that popped up and choose ext3 as the format type. You will also need to install GRUB bootloader to properly boot Android, as well as allow your system directory to be read-write. After selecting both of these options, VirtualBox will begin to install Android from the ISO image you provided earlier.

Step 5: First BootThe install is pretty quick, but don not run it after it has completed. You will first need to unmount the ISO by clicking the CD icon on the bottom right of the VirtualBox window and unchecking the android-x86-4.2-20130228.iso option, then selecting force unmount. After the unmount completes, select Reset from the Machine menu bar drop-down. Your new machine will now be ready to go, but the initial boot-up time will be longer than usual because it is optimizing the Dalvik runtime.

Welcome to AndroidOnce the boot up finishes, you will go through the normal Android welcome screens.Your mouse cursor will be stuck inside the VirtualBox window after you start clicking inside of it, so you will need to press the left Command button on your keyboard to free it.Also, you can go ahead and skip the Wi-Fi login prompt because VirtualBox will piggyback off your Mac's internet connection. And there you have it, folks! You are now the proud owner of a Mac that can download and run any Android app that is compatible with KitKat.The ROM that comes preloaded on this build is pretty bare bones, but you can always download whatever you want from the Google Play Store app. Be sure to drop me comment below if you run into any issues getting your virtual machine up and running!

How To: Use the Best Root-Level Customization Tool for Android
With certain apps and games, it's all about the settings. In order to get your money's worth with one of these, you simply have to take the time to tweak and adjust various options, which is something a lot of users don't necessarily want to do.Take GravityBox for example—the popular all-in-one Xposed module lets you change just about anything in your phone's main interface, but the sheer amount of options it offers can be intimidating.Don't Miss: How to Root Almost Any Android DeviceSo to help you get a better handle on this awesome tool, I'll go over all of the best settings for GravityBox below. And since a guided tour of the entire app would be way too long of a read, I'll just focus on the highlights and the more interesting options, which should get you well on your way.Don't Miss: How to Install Xposed on Android Marshmallow

Lock Screen TweaksWorking through the menus in the order they appear, the first category worth delving into is "Lockscreen tweaks."Add Easy-Access ShortcutsPerhaps the biggest difference maker here is the "Shortcuts" option—select this one, then you'll see a menu with six different application slots. You can select as many of these slots as you'd like, then choose either an app or an activity to populate them. They'll appear as small icons beneath your lock screen clock that can be launched in one tap. Unlock Your Device FasterAside from that, the "Quick unlock" option is another good one in Lockscreen tweaks. Enabling this option will remove the need to tap the check icon after entering your PIN, which is one of the things iOS does better than Android. But be careful here, because this option basically just presses enter for you after four digits have been typed in, which means that if your PIN is five or more digits, you could end up locked out of your phone. So after ticking the "Quick unlock" box, make sure to use the "PIN length" slider to let GravityBox know exactly how many digits are in your PIN.

Statusbar TweaksNext up is the "Statusbar tweaks" menu. Within this one, the first setting of note can be found under the "QuickSettings management" section.Own Your Quick-SettingsFrom here, select the "Statusbar QuickSettings tiles" option, then you'll see a menu that lets you add, remove, or reorder the toggle switches in your Quick Settings menu. It's a great way to customize one of Android's most centralized menus, but it should be noted that this can cause conflicts if you've used Marshmallow's hidden System UI Tuner option to tweak your Quick Settings already. While you're still in the QuickSettings management menu, there's another option worth checking out. By default, you have to either swipe down twice from the top of your screen, or swipe down with two fingers to access Android's Quick Settings, and that's just too much work.Access Quick-Settings FasterIf you'd like to change that, select the "Quick pulldown" option, which lets you access Quick Settings in a single swipe from either the left or right edge of your status bar. From here, I'd recommend choosing "Right" as the Quick pulldown edge, because this is more in line with the way Android tablets work, and the options you adjust in the Quick Settings menu are already represented by icons on the right side of your status bar. Customize the ClockBacking out to the main Statusbar tweaks menu, the next noteworthy options can be found under the "Clock settings" category. First, if you use a 12-hour clock format, tick the box next to "Hide AM/PM" to get rid of the status bar indicator that tells you whether it's dark or light outside—something your eyes already do for you.Hide Alarm IconThen beneath that, the "Hide alarm icon" option gets rid of the indicator that appears in your status bar when you have an alarm set. This is useful for freeing up space in the status bar, especially if you use your phone as your main alarm clock. Tune Brightness from the Status BarFinally, towards the bottom of the main Statusbar tweaks menu, the "Enable brightness control" option is an interesting one. If enabled, this will allow you to simply slide your finger across the status bar to adjust your display brightness from any screen.Double-Tap to LockFrom there, if you tick the box next to "Disable peek," you can then enable the "Double-tap to sleep" option, which will let you lock your device from any screen by tapping the status bar twice.

Navigation Bar TweaksThe next main category worth visiting is the "Navigation bar tweaks" menu—one you'll definitely want to check out if you have on-screen navigation buttons. Before you can make any changes here, you'll need to enable the "Master switch" option at the top the screen.Hide the Keyboard SwitcherFrom there, you'll probably want to tick the box next to "Hide IME switcher," which gets rid of the icon that appears in your navigation bar when you're using a third-party keyboard.Change Navigation Bar SizeThen finally, three sliders towards the bottom of this menu allow you to adjust the size of the navigation bar itself. Here, you can shrink the height of both portrait and landscape navigation bars, plus you can adjust the width and spacing of the buttons themselves.

Power TweaksNext up, the "Power tweaks" menu in GravityBox has a pair of noteworthy options.Add Options to Power MenuFirst, tick the box next to "Advanced reboot menu," then the standard popup that appears when you long-press your power button will now have options for rebooting your device directly into recovery mode or the bootloader menu.Get Rid of 'Low Battery' WarningThen, if you're like me and you keep a close eye on your device's battery life already, the popup that appears when you hit 15% is probably just a nuisance to you. To remedy that, I'd recommend setting the "Low battery warning" option to "Non-intrusive," which will cause this warning message to appear as a simple notification in your status bar instead.

Media TweaksHere, you can adjust several options for media playback on your device.Skip Tracks with the Volume ButtonsUnder the "Media tweaks" menu, the "Volume keys skip track" option is a fun one. With this enabled, you can skip to the next track in your playlist without ever turning your screen on—just long-press the volume up button to skip ahead, or do the same for the volume down button to flip back to the last track.Set Media Volume as DefaultThen perhaps one of my biggest gripes with Android is how the volume buttons control notification volume by default, despite the fact that media playback volume needs to be adjusted far more frequently. To remedy this, simply tick the box next to "Force media volume control," and from now on, your volume buttons will always adjust media volume by default.

Navigation Keys ActionsFrom there, the "Navigation keys action" menu has some useful tweaks, but most require that you've enabled the "Master switch" option under "Navigation bar tweaks."Add Actions to the Navigation BarMainly, you can assign custom long-press and double-tap actions for each of your navigation buttons, and the setup process is extremely straightforward.Control Cursor with Volume KeysBut the most interesting option in this menu is "Volume key cursor control." Tap this one, then select "Volume up/down moves cursor left/right," and from now on, when you're typing in any text field, you can use your device's volume buttons to precisely move the cursor.

Miscellaneous TweaksThe last GravityBox menu worth delving into is "Miscellaneous tweaks."Clear All RecentsThe most noteworthy option is "Clear all recent tasks," which places a button in your recent apps/overview menu that clears away all of the entries in one tap. However, this button is white by default, which makes it hard to see in some cases. So to remedy that, I'd suggest ticking the box next to the "Use alternate icon" option, which gives the "Clear all" button a bit of Material Design instead. How To: Mimic the New iOS 7 Look in iOS 6 on Your Jailbroken iPhone

How To: Mimic the New iOS 7 Look in iOS 6 on Your Jailbroken iPhone

Apple is set to release its latest operating system for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch this fall, and if you haven't noticed yet from our iOS 7 softModder guides, it's going to be pretty slick.Gone are the boring old icons that have remained basically unchanged since the very first iOS was released back in 2007. There is a lot more color and a flatness to the icons that I think works really well. Images via wonderhowto.com Of course, there are haters that think the new design is whack, but I think it's a huge move in the right direction and it's hard for me to believe that iOS 7 looks worse than older versions. If you're like me and want the new design before it comes out, you're in luck. If you have access to a developer account, you can just download the the beta. But as with all betas, it's buggy and requires you to remove your jailbreak if you have one.Instead of going through all that hassle, I'm going to show you how to create the most believable iOS 7 clone you can find on your iOS 6 device. All you need is a jailbroken phone. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: First Jailbreak Your iPhoneIf you have not jailbroken you iPhone, you can check out these guides for help. Once your jailbreak is complete, you'll need to go into Cydia and download WinterBoard, which is essential if you wish to change any visuals on your iPhone. Cydia and WinterBoard are all you really need to get started.

Step 2: Download the iOS 7 ThemeNow that you have a jailbroken iPhone with Cydia and WinterBoard installed, we can commence with the cloning process. It's been a few weeks since the beta version was released, and themers have been hard at work creating lookalike iOS 7 themes. The most complete version was created by pw5a29 and is available in the Modmyi repo, simply called iOS 7 Theme. Once installed, head over to WinterBoard and check out all the iOS 7 items listed for your device. Looks pretty cool, right? This theme includes nearly everything you need for a convincing iOS 7 clone, except a few items, which I'll cover next.

Step 3: Download the iOS 7 CalculatorI use the calculator a lot because I was an English major and math is far from my strong suit. While the iOS 6 calculator is perfectly adequate, it could still use a bit of sprucing up, and that's exactly what Apple did in iOS 7.You can find the iOS 7 Calculator theme, by Feras Younis QR, in the Big Boss repo. After installation, head over to WinterBoard and check the theme for your device, either iPhone 4/4S or the 5. Respring and your new Calculator is ready for use.

Step 4: Download the iOS 7 Signal Bars & Battery IconThe new iOS also includes a few minor changes to the status bar. Instead of the standard vertical signal bars, Apple opted for horizontal dots and a slight update to the battery icon, which turns green when charging. You can download iOS 7 Bars and Battery by Dom Esposito in Cydia.
Step 5: Download the iOS 7 Live ClockIt seems that iOS 7 is finally addressing some of the WTF questions many iPhone users had regarding the lack of a live clock icon. Finally, iOS 7 brings this case to a close. If you want the iOS 7 live clock on your iPhone, you'll have to download LiveClock by Ryan Petrich in the ModMyi repo. Since you've already installed the iOS 7 clock via the iOS 7 Theme, you will not need to change anything in WinterBoard. Once LiveClock is installed and you respring your device, your clock icon should be ticking away.

Step 6: Download the iOS 7 FontIn order to be the most realistic iOS 7 clone, you'll need to have the iOS 7 font, so grab BytaFont from Cydia . You may have noticed a few BytaFont applications in the Apple App Store, but these apps are fake and cost money. DO NOT download these applications as they will not work! After downloading BytaFont from Cydia, you can now proceed to download the iOS 7 font in the Modmyi repo. Then, head back over to BytaFont and select the iOS 7 font and respring. Below, you can see the old vs. new look. Now your iPhone is really starting to look like the real iOS 7.

Step 7: Download the iOS 7 Control CenteriOS 7 comes with a new feature called Control Center, which finally adds widgets that users have been begging for since the beginning of time. While there's no way to install Control Center on iOS 6, you can turn your Notification Center into decent Control Center replica. You'll need to download iOS 7 Control Toggles and NCSettings. NCSettings allows for quick access to some of the most frequented settings on your iPhone, which is what Control Center will do when released this fall. With NCSettings installed, you'll need to enable it from the Notifications menu in Settings. NCSettings should be under the "Not in Notification Center" section. Tap it and slide the button from Off to On. Now go back to Settings and scroll down NCSettings; go to Themes and select iOS 7 Toggles. Now you have iOS 7-style toggles in your Notification Center.
Step 8: Download the iOS 7 KeyboardIf you have Color Keyboard, you can grab a black or white version of the iOS 7 keyboard. Color Keyboard does cost $1.99, but if you want the most realistic iOS 7 clone it may be worth the price. Plus there are a ton of other super cool keyboards, as well.

And Now You Have iOS 7 on Your iOS 6 DeviceHere's a quick side-by-side comparison of my before and after on the home screen. Images via wonderhowto.com
Known IssuesNow, there are some issues that you may run into after the installation of these iOS 7 theme tweaks.

#1: Invisible BatteryIf you selected the iOS 7 Lockscreen, you may notice that the battery is no longer visible when charging. You can simply uncheck the Lockscreen theme option in WinterBoard if you wish to see your battery info.

#2: Transparent Passcode & Unlock SliderSimilar to the Battery issue, the iOS 7 Lockscreen also forces your Passcode Keys and Unlock Slider to be transparent. While the need to see your battery is somewhat necessary, you can enter in your passcode and slide to unlock the screen without the graphics. All you need to do is slide where it says slide and type in your passcode as usual. But if you want the graphics you will need to deselect the iOS 7 Lockscreen theme in WinterBoard.Remember, these tweaks are purely visual. The apps will look like iOS 7, but they will still run as they normally would on your current iOS. What do you think of the new iOS 7 look? Is it an upgrade or a downgrade? Let us know in the comments section.
